Depends how you like your kitchen. I personally keep my dishes/plates in deep drawers and I use them every day. My wall units are the least used and I especially hate below counter deep cupboards so I have pull out larders and drawers everywhere.

All my below counter deep cupboards have drawers or pull outs, so I agree with you there, but I also like to have eye level shallow units for glasses, cups, smaller things. Mainly those are wall units, but we also have some very usefull full height shallow units elsewhere.

Deep units above the oven or other built-ins I would regard as only suitable for less used bulky items.

I like the OP's wall of deep units housing the oven, fridge, freezer etc, but personally, I would need eye level shallow storage too.

Hi - I'm in the process of ordering a wooden worktop but I'm confused by how to order it. I've measured my existing worktop as it will be the same measurements which are Worktop 1: 2300mmx580x40; Worktop 2: 2480x630x40; Island: 1280x670x40 and 920x670x40 (2 pieces required.) Could anyone please advise me as to which measurements I should order to ensure that there is minimal wastage? When I look on the internet I can't seem to order my specific measurements and don't want to end up having bought more than I really need!!

    Thanks so much!

As far as I can remember that they come in 1m, 2m, 3m, 4m lengths. Your fitter can advise you what to order. You can find deep worktop for island too.
I wouldn't scrimp on the lengths, easier to cut the length off than to join two pieces together. You can always use the cut offs to make other things like a chopping board, shelves etc.
I found a good deal on ebay.

If you're going down this route, I would think slightly out of the box and instead of dropping down to worktop height on the long way, run tall units right into the corner? I'll show you what I mean when I get the chance to play about with it :)
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Is that a dishwasher and a washing machine on the right? The idea of a washing machine outside the cooking area is good, as it means the washing machine can be loaded without disturbing the cook, but the dishwasher would perhaps be inconvenient there as you need to walk round to the cupboards where you store stuff. Sorry if I have misunderstood.

  • I like it but if it was mine I would put the micro next to the double oven and then put something like a coffee machine above it to even it all up.
I would also put an integrated fridge freezer in so its a continuous run of doors. Id also go for a least a 5 burner hob and lastly i would keep the layout how it was to start of with. A long run of larder units looks really good imo and give loads of storage even if 2 have appliances in them

None of it money saving but would look good :)

The floor space between the wall and the island looks narrow - OK if there'll only be one person in the area at a time but might be awkward for two people to move around.

I feel so awful - didnt see you guys had responded to this as we had serious rethink about knocking 3 rooms into 1 - hubby wasnt keen in the first place and it was going to add so much to the building/extension. Anyway we have decided to put the kitchen in the extension which totally throws out the above - we are hopefully starting the building of the extension in a couple of weeks - the kitchen will be 21 ft 6 by 12 ft 1 1/2 with a door and window at the rear and french doors with side panels at the rear. Having an a frame ceiling and a velux in either side. I want a really bright room.. will try and paste new kitchen plan
