For some reason the pictures wont show for me, if you can upload to flickr or imageshack or something else I'll have a proper look for you...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

The area behind the stools just looks like dead space.

I can't fathom the logic of having the hob and oven back-to-back. What happens when someone is standing stirring things on the hob, and another needs to open the oven? You'll get in each other's way.

Seems short of worktop space, as others have said.

That is what I was thinking. What is the purpose of that space? The projecting kitchen units cut it off, but then again I don't know the OP's requirements.

I think the OP will be using that space for a sofa?

And yes you could move the hob/oven so they are not in line.

I don't think there's lack of workspace as you have a double depth of worktop which doubles up as a breakfast bar.

Thanks everyone - the wall behind where the stools are is for a sofa - or maybe move the table and chairs there and have the sofa at the front of the bungalow near the large window - not sure yet

point taken about the cooking appliances - I knew I had to keep washing things - sink d/w and w/m together and got carried away thinking it was best to keep coking things reasonably close. I really fancied a bank of tall units as I find them so darned useful - they hold sooo much. I thought having an island that size gave lots of worktop space - maybe I was wrong - one thing I hate is standing washing up or cooking staring right at a wall - I really want a sociable room - want to face into it - chat to everyone rather than having my back to all - loving hearing what you all think - even though the plan isnt getting much of a thumbs up - ideas on what/how to change also appreciated

I have to disagree with most of what's been said to be honest. I love the tall bank of units and the over-sized island. I think it gives all the storage you need, with an informal seating area and makes the kitchen flow well...

Although I do have to agree with the comments regarding the butler sink. It just isn't right here...

I agree with you totally. I've seen so many kitchens when house hunting that have loads of worktop that has loads of carp on it that could be easily put away and not clog up the worktop space (that they did). This way most of the stuff is put away but easily accessible, especially if you plan to put pull out larder and loads of drawers.
Personally I like the look of butler's sink but would not ever have one. I'd go for a chunky corian worktop with built in sink on the kitchen island.
The layout looks like a great sociable area that you'll enjoy cooking on. You can move the unit about in the planning stage.

And OP just go for what you think it will work for you, not what other people like.

yes you have alot of worktop space but its not in the working part of your kitchen. its all round on the side of the kitchen where the stools are. which then means you cant use that length of worktop as people will be sitting there (you will also get fed up of having to walk backwards and forwards around the island)

having looked at plans for kitchens that include an island, i would say all have additional worktop space elsewhere

i dont know how big your family is, but there is no way i would have enough room to dish up an evening meal in your proposed kitchen. i have a similar layout to yourself around my hob, so single unit to the right, double to the left and then the sink - i cannot work in this area, as it is too bitty, i have to walk across the room to my long run of worktop to do the simplest of tasks. as soon as you put any dirty items to the side of the sink for washing, that eats into your worktop space even more

i also agree with others on the butler sink, mouldy wooden worktops, and because they go under the worktop, eat into the cupboard space underneath
