Another thought - Most laptops can switch the wireless adaptor off and on via a hotkey and this survives the boot. On my machines (work and pers), this is fn/F8 or F12 - look for a little aerial image painted on the key. It could be as simple as that?

So if it is IE8, can we assume you are running WinXP?

Also, if she has been using it out and about - eg, school, college etc, they may have set a proxy for access. If so, reset that to autodetect - In IE8, that is Tools Menu - Internet Options - Connections Tab - LAN Settings, then check autodetect and uncheck config script &/or Proxy

Lifeisbutadream, have you tried turning the wireless router off and back on again, and then tried connecting? I sometimes have a problem connecting, this can sometimes sort it out.

If that doesn't fix it, then you will need to log into the router and check your access settings - how you do this will depend on your make an model of router, so if you can post those, we can help you with that.

As above, turn the modem off (1 minute) then on.

Some questions that might be useful to answered:
Is it only internet explorer that doesn't work, or do other programs that use the net not work?

Stick a network cable into it, and see what internet programs work and what don't.

How old is the laptop? What brand/model? What ISP do you use, and what is the name/model of the wireless modem?

Press Start Menu, the right click on 'My Computer' or 'Computer' and select 'Properties'. Look for 'Device manager', or click on 'Hardware' and then 'Device Manager'. It'll bring up a list of all your devices on the computer - just look for ones with obvious angry icons, e.g. exclamation marks, and let us know what they are. If there are none with angry icons, then let us know too.

What does it say when you start it up?

In internet explorer, if you go to http://192.168.0.1/start.htm, do you get a window pop up asking you to log in? This is the default address of NetGear routers, and I don't know of many people who have change it.

If you do get this window, then it means that the laptop is connecting to the router OK, but will probably mean that the router is not allowing the laptop through to the internet. In that case, you will need to change the settings on the router.

If you don't get the window up, then the problem is more likely to be at the laptop end, unless the IP address of the router has been changed.

    Hth
