I had an Amex green card for 10 years and on numerous occasions paid a £30 fine if my monthly payment was days late. Has anyone attempted to claim back from Amex.
I have an Amex credit card (they took away the Green card despite it having a zero balance because they'd not taken a DD on the credit card - what a shower!) and am pursuing it as well, but would really like to know if anyone has had any luck with the Green Amex card.0 -
American Express reply letter ... advice what to do next please?
Hi all,
Tips on what to do next please. I am claiming approx £910 worth of charges on 2 cards. It would be interesting to know if anyone has had any joy getting Amex to cough up! ... Here's what Amex say:
I refer to your letter concerning the default charges levied to your account.
American Express maintains that our charges are fair and reasonable and are avoidable by complying with the t&c's of our agreement with you.
In light og the OFT recommendation American Express has changed the charging policy with respect to default payments. Our charges vary according to product and account type and reflect the differing risks accociated with each. The changes were applicable from 1st July 2006 and our previous default charges will not be amended.
We have informed the OFT that our default charges will be £8 on credit cards. This reflects the costs involved in administering accounts in default, and is calculated in accordance with the guidance issued by the OFT on how to calculate default charges.
We have informed the OFT that our default charges will be £10 on charges cards. This reflects the costs involved in administering accounts in default, and is calculated in accordance with the guidance issued by the OFT in how to calculate default charges. This reflects an amount reflecting the additional cost to us of funding borrowing on the customer's behalf whilst they are in breach of their payment obligations. I trust this clarifies the situation""onwards & upwards"0 -
Hi MSE's, I went after Amex for £700 worth of charges levied for a 2 cards. It took 6 weeks to turnaround. Yesterday I received a letter with a cheque for £250 offering full and final settlement. Their letter states the cheque represents the difference between what they have charged me vs the OFT charges guide ... i.e. £8 & £10 (Charge card & Credit Card). I really would like to go for the FULL amount and not an offer of a third of what i know i'm due back.
What is the best thing to do from here please?"onwards & upwards"0 -

It would seem the best thing to do would be to send a letter accepting this offer as part payment without predujice, but advising them that you intend to persue them for the outstanding amount through the courts if necessary and subject to your timescales.. And also advise them that the OFT have never issued a CHARGES GUIDE just a recommended threshold figure that the OFT would not intervene unless the charge went over it....0 -
Thanks PAUL1E .... is there a template letter available in relation to what you have just said. :T"onwards & upwards"0

I claimed £105 from Amex and won without any quibble. They were polite throughout and I received the cheque from them with a letter of denial !!
You CAN beat them !!Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -
Hi, has anyone tried to recover Am Ex charges. Basically my account was charged a % every month for missed payments. This totalled approx £1700. I sent the letter to Am Ex and received a reply on Fri saying it was in there terms of there agreement that I signed. Considering this was over 4 years ago, I have no idea if this is true or not.
Can someone please advise for the next step if there is one? many thanks.
Also thanks for all your help from the webiste, I have successfully recovered money from Natwest and Barclays.
