My boys were back at school yesterday...good start for eldest, his philosophy teacher was off for the 1st lesson back!
It was count the amount of fences down time this morning, the wind was horrendous last night and at one point, we were the windiest area in the country...certainly felt and sounded like it I can tell you. It was also dodge the wheelie bin which had been blown into the road in the car on the way to school this morning.....lots of fun.
Amazingly, our leaning shed is still standing! Been expecting that thing to collapse for the last couple of years but there it is, still up...although now minus a roof, will have to get my brother up to sort it out and see if we can get another winter out of it.
I saw a paving slab that appeared to have been moved by the wind, also a full wall at the bottom of a hedge that had been blown away 'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

Glad to know you still think I'm hot!
PS I got my first FiT cheque the other day - a tad over £300.
[giggedy] I'll happily pop round on a regular to give you a FiT check... [giggedy]It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I heard something on the news this morning that set a train of thought in place this morning and couldn't believe that I'd missed a milestone. Last year was five years after having my tumour removed. So I've got through five years of being alive and with no noticeable effects (other than a scar).
When I first had tumour removed I couldn't get a diagnosis and it was like that for a very long time. I knew it was a very rare type of potential melanoma, I knew that my path report wasn't good in that it had started to breach the next level of skin down and there were signs that it had travelled elsewhere. I knew it was very fast growing (it went from nothing there to big enough to have removed under guidelines in less than a year). Having said that, there was also a chance it was a benign tumour that mimicked melanoma. Either way it was a hard decision because it was so rarely seen. Plus the benign version was found mostly in children and almost never in the over 40s (and I was in my early 40s when it first appeared).
My local hospital trust could not determine accurately what type of tumour it was so they forwarded it to the regional panel. They too could not decide, so it went to the national panel, under the leading expert. They too could not decide so I spent 18 months in limbo. Eventually my husband and I found a Dr doing research in the US in terms of the genetics of melanoma, so I paid to have my sample tested there. They said they thought it wasn't melanoma. Finally, I could get a job, get insurances without that weight over my head.
In the meantime, while waiting for diagnosis. I'd asked the doctors here how I would know if I didn't have it. They said if I was still alive in 15 years, then I would finally know that I didn't have it. Well, five years down, ten to go. I can't believe I missed that milestone. Because of the uncertainty of diagnosis I used to pass each year with a big hurrah. Five down and I forgot. So I thought I'd mention it as it was a horrible time to go through and I spend every year - no matter what life throws at me - genuinely overjoyed to be alive.
Excellent stuff. I had a friend I supported through their treatment. They were diagnosed round the time we were awarded the olympics. I remember celebrating & said friend was very down & didn't care cos they would be dead at the time.
I cheekily rang them at new year to remind them of this.
Since then, they had the treatment. They naughtily haven't been back for all the checks they should have, but hopefully they are well. They now have 3 grandchildren they'd never have seen. Their all clear was given on 22 december IIRC. Best christmas present ever. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

Well done Viva  It's always good to have you with us, let's keep it that way
Glad your party was a success silvercar, you must be a fab cook. Weren't you posting pretty early the next morning yourself?
I know nothing about care homes and deprivation of assets and stuff, the legalities of renting in europe or even, thankfully, the UK housing market at the moment. I'm taking a breather and having a bit of a potter.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

The old can present well conversationally ..... it's only when you know something's wrong/bizarre that you can spot stuff. e.g. if somebody overheard the old telling me "My grandson's just visited me, did you see him? He's only just left" they'd think "All there mentally". I'd reply "No, I must have missed him.".... but there is no grandson/never has been - and I simply play along with whatever nonsense the old comes out with.
Some olds can be very convincing, at least in the short term. We had this 20 years ago with my gran, who had Alzheimer's. She was managing well, in a little village where she'd lived for years and all her neighbours knew her, but she was forgetting to eat, so we arranged a home help to go in every day, do a bit of light housework, and sit over her when her meal-on-wheels arrived and make sure she ate it. We (I mean my mum) claimed attendance allowance to help pay for this. On the attendance allowance application she specifically said that Gran wasn't all there and if they had questions they should ask her GP, but no, they sent an inspector to check up on her.
<Bell rings and door opens>
Him: Hello Mrs S. I'm from <insert name of council department or whatever> and I've come to talk to you about your home help.
Her: Home help? I haven't got a home help. I've never needed a home help.
Him: Oh, I see. Well sorry to have bothered you then.
So Mum got a rude letter accusing her of claiming the AA fraudulently. She wrote back explaining that Gran did have a home help, but couldn't remember anything about it, and asking them please to check with the GP. Did they ask the GP? No.

Him: Hello Mrs S. I'm from <insert name of council department or whatever> and I've come to follow up on the visit of the council inspector recently.
Her: Council inspector? I haven't seen a council inspector. There hasn't been one visiting me at all.
Him: <Light dawns>

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Fab ordered rather than cook. I made desserts and ordered the rest. We were quite organised, borrowed a coat rail and hangers because of the weather. Got a number of folding chairs for more seating, paper ware to make clearing up quicker. Put out old wedding photos for general amusement. Made a drinks table at one end of the kitchen, food at the other. Logistically we are organised.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Look, you & I already have moments of thinking things have moved on technologically without us, so just imagine what it would be like waking up 100 years in the future.....
....Well, it's impossible really, isn't it?
And besides, think of the house prices then: £3bn for a grotty bedsit in St Austell....and that would just be the council tax!!! :rotfl:
Weren't there predictions made about a hundred years ago that one day every big town in America would have a telephone, and after the first road traffic fatality the judge said "let's hope this terrible accident is never repeated":DThere is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
