    1 gallon is 4.546 litres.

    If diesel costs 140.9p/litre and petrol costs 135.9p/litre (both figures entirely invented by me), then:

    Car 1: £1,598
    Car 2: £1,769
    Car 3: £2,494

    Just paste the formula ((135.9*4.546)/37.3*15000)/100 into Google where:
    135.9 = pence per litre
    4.546 = litres in a gallon
    37.3 = mpg
    15000 = annual mileage
    100 = converts pennies into pounds (could leave this off and change 15000 to 150, but I wanted the formula to look simple to follow)

    Thanks PN. Much appreciated. I can make an informed decision now! I've always bought petrol because I'm scared of putting the wrong thing in at the pump :o Think that needs to change.

    5 healthy hawthorn plants. 25 were gifted to me, and it's a shame to let them go to waste.

    Thanks sss, I will do. It's not due for a few months.... I was thinking about it as he's using the car this week.... will certainly have to shop around to see if I can get a more satisfactory deal when the time comes.

    My premium went up 45% when I put my oh on it. She's 32 but the insurance co treats her as if she's just passed her test as she held an Australian licence previously and stupidly didn't exchange it for a uk licence within the 5 year period allowed, so had to get a provisional licence and take a test (didn't put her on until she had passed).

    So I can quite imagine why you don't want to put DS on for the whole year!

    The good news is that my renewal premium went down 20% this year, although still £800. Probably need to do some MSEing on it.

    Diesel cars also need less maintenance IME, unless you put petrol in the tank of course.

    I have a funny feeling that diesel pump nozzles are smaller than petrol ones so you can't fill with petrol by mistake. You might want to confirm that with someone who knows rather than someone who has a funny feeling though.

    Oh, you can! I once put a couple of quid's worth of petrol in the van before realising, but I just stuck another £45 worth of diesel on top of it....and prayed.

    Nothing weird happened. :)

    We were all with DL, each getting 20% discount for have someone else insured with them, plus a discount for house insurance. Then the renewal for DS went sky high, even though he got another year NCD and no claims. So his car moved to Admiral, which gave a discount because his car is home while he is at uni. Admiral were also happy to add DS2 as a named driver until renewal.

    Now friends in the area with similar set up say Admiral multi car is the way to go. Apparently you commit to move each car to Admiral multi car on their renewal and do a part year, so next year they will all have the same renewal. Downside is from then on all your cars renew on the same date - a big hit. Other downside is I'm not convinced Admiral is a quality product. If we do move all the cars that will increase the house insurance, as we'll lose the discount for car insuring with DL and don't want to move that because they give a bundle to include emergency household cover and travel insurance that includes the boys travelling alone.

    I thought that - though it may be the other way round.

    Good point about not wanting them all to expire at the same time as you rarely get the best price from the same company year after year.

    I was with DL a few years ago but like with you, they became uncompetitive.

    Insurance and banks. Treat them business like and show no loyalty as that is how they all treat you.

    Even though my dad only ever owned/drove old/unfashionable cars (e.g. Skoda before they were mainstream), I was NEVER allowed to drive his car. I did once though, when he'd driven to work and been carted off in an ambulance and somebody had to drive the car home from the works' car park.... but he wasn't happy about it. I've always had to have my own insurance. I did get a couple of years' claims history by having a moped.
