I could never understand why Bridgwater doesn't have an 'e' - anyone know? The other wierd thing about that stretch of motorway is that every junction is for the A38.Also whilst strait is no doubt a word the only derivation for 'home straight' I could find was that it came from the US home stretch - no mention of navigable passages...0

I could never understand why Bridgwater doesn't have an 'e' - anyone know?It is thought that the town was originally called Brigg, meaning Quay. It has been argued that the name may instead come from the Old English brycg (gang plank) or Old Norse bryggja (quay), though this idea has been opposed on etymological grounds.[2] In the Domesday Book the town is listed as Brugie, while Brugia was also used. After the Norman invasion the land was given to Walter of Douai,[3] hence becoming known variously as Burgh-Walter, Brugg-Walter and Brigg-Walter, eventually corrupted to Bridgwater. An alternative version is that it derives from "Bridge of Walter" (i.e. Walter's Bridge).[4][5]0

Obviously Madonna Papa Don't Preach
I think he was being sarcastic. I very rarely stay on m5 further south that Bristol...or Cribbs causeway. The a38 I have done from north of bristol to south oin somerset. Once and never again. I always pick routes to avoid it now. Also hate the journey over to Taunton from my old patch, despise it. Made me avoid ever going west to be honest. though I love places like Chard. Back in the days when I used to try and make a journey I did a lot more interesting and increasing my knowledge of the country is when I did a long long stint on the a 38. When petrol was cheap...filling up cost me £12 and my car ran on that for ages. There are some nice places there I know, I just find the road terminally depressing for some reason. It takes a lot for the m5 to beat something as a route I think.0

The Malacca Strait is my favourite. Mostly because it translates as a very naughty word in Greek (w*nker). I think it was named by a greek with a sense of humour. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing?
