chewmylegoff...does an adopted americanor half american have rights to an american passport of brough up by non US parents?

i had never actually thought about that but a quick google tells me no - you have to be a US citizen to get a US passport, and you can only claim citizenship through a parent who is a US citizen and meets certain residency requirements.

i expect in practical terms, even if i did have the technical right to get a passport, it would be impossible for me to evidence that my grandfather is american.

also (i) the americans have some weird ideas about tax - i.e. if you are an american citizen, my understanding is that you have to pay US tax on your global earnings and you end up getting quite nasty double taxation, although i'm not an expert and this may be complete rubbish; and (ii) who would want to work in the US anyway, given that you only get about 12 days holiday a year or something silly like that. i'll stick with my 38 days thanks!

I dunno. I should ask my family memeber who are american. I know the US to europe postings are pretty popular in firm...but then mostly the people taking them are interested in culture etc...but their salaries ar ehigher anyway in firm I think. I'll check...its meant to be the same firm wide but cost of living etc included...the argument has always been US lawyers have significant debt above that of european counter parts so need bigger salaries...IIRC. I might not. :)

The Yankees have a different view towards dual nationality, than most of the rest of us.

If you are 'granted' US Citizenship you are expected/required to give up all other citizenships.

Of course they do not have any powers to remove your rights to, say UK citizenship, and even if you handed over your UK passport your entitlement to hold one would not cease.

My neices are half yank half Brit (actually thats not true but for sake of argument here it will do). I actually have no idea what their passports are tbh. I know one is dead set now on us for atleast her first degree (she thinks she fancies either academia or law......) she has a situation which makes US a good choice for her for university, and...I don'[t think its a bad choice for her. My bil is a yank....but an anglophiliac yank of the worst sort IMO..(he's an utter snob and ...other things.). It looks though like his country might offer the girls something more in the short term than this one though.

DH's siblings need proper jobs with tenure at unis there or their future might change.....one I think might come back to Europe (marrying a European)and the other really doesn't want to.

Yeah, with 27 of the top 50 of the World's Universities being based in the U.S. (7 of the top 10) it's probably a good idea.

Plus, they like to use lots of Latin words, such as "Summa !!! Laude" and "Phi Beta Kappa" to describe their degrees, so it sounds much posher than a mere 2:1

P.S. Caught "swearing" in Latin by the MSE Filter...........oops

She's applying to East Coast Ivy League schools and it should work out well for her. I hope so, certainly. :)

Standard American holidays are 2 weeks a year, OH says.

    That's made my day:rotfl:.

Has anyone had trick or treaters round? I bought a bowl of sweets and not a single knock on the door. At this rate they'll end up on my lap to munch through watching telly tonight. Not good:eek:.

None here either. They tend to go to the "rich pickings" in the middle of the village as a posed to the outskirts where they may have to walk a few extra steps per door.

Take a picture to show us if you end up with chocolate all over your face :EasterBun

Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
