A terrible day for losses from cancer. Over on the music threads they're mourning the loss of Bert Jansch, of Pentangle, who were behind one of the most evocative tunes of the 60s, Light Flight (AKA the theme tune to Take Three Girls)

Pancreatic cancer is not a good one. I think life expectancy is less than a year, unless the patient is suitable for the Whipple procedure (that Jobs was assumed to have had). But that procedure is a major operation and not everyone recovers from it, even then its side effects can be life damaging.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. He's counsel then?
re this the other day... Counsel in the big solicitor firms means something slightly different now from how I understood it a few years ago...how NDG would use it I guess (though it maybe she is more familiar with the larger/rounder interpretation.....it sounded cocky to be when I heard it not meaning ''the Barrister''). e.g. there are solicitors in some firms whose job title is counsel...and it means something like ''important but this person doesn't want to be or isn't wanted by us to be a partner''. Also, in some juristictions there is not the divide between solicitor and barrister....there is just ''Advocate'' . regardless of qualification I think the international firms (don't know about Magic circle or similar) are increasingly using ''associate'' regardless of qaulifications/juristiction because different people's countries qualifications lead to the same rank in the firm.0 -

I've always thought this is a biggie for teachers - the career progression is not generally into more advanced teaching but in to managing departments and schools which I would have thought were very different skills. I would have thought it should be structured so the best teachers can be promoted in to the most difficult teaching jobs - may be inner city comps etc and pay should reflect what the teacher is producing for pupils rather than career advancement being in to management.
Steve Jobs will be missed. I am very ambivalent about Apple - the idea that computers should be consumer products not geek products makes sense to me but the associated tie-ins (eg ipod/itunes) and the brand worship allowing ridiculous price premiums really wind me up.A mate of mine who's pretty eloquent (wish I was too, but I'm just loquacious!) used to moan about his colleague, saying "I wish I knew as much about anything as he knows about everything". There's loads of people like that know-it-all out there.
I remember discussing a comedy series called "Arrested Development" with some pals in the private sector - the central premise of the show being that in private businesses, there are certain arbitrary processes that can accelerate people ( maybe unsuitable ones) to the top, so that the people running the businesses could barely run a bath.
Me and my pals were always cracking jokes and knew what humour appealed to everyone, but they seemed to find that as funny as a burning orphanage (I must update my metaphors) as they had to deal with such dysfunctional organisations all the time. Their general response was - that's not funny, that's real life in the world of business!
For LiR, if you're wondering whether people with a talent for one useful thing could be promoted to become incompetent managers over others?
The answer's yes.I think....0 -

My FIL had that - appeared to have been successful. But then he collapsed again and it was found to have spread everywhere....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

As far as I, and the general legal system, uses it, it means me (-:
e.g. "Counsel for the Defendant submitted that....."...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

yep...that's how we still use it at home too. Not that we talk about barristers at home much...not as barristers anyway, as friends maybe....but then we don't refer to them as Counsel :rotfl::rotfl:0 -

My cousin had that procedure, having been deemed a suitable case but the effects of the operation were too much for his body to cope withI'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
