Cheery cancer news (if that is not an oxymoron)

My Dad had test results: all the liver tumours have definitely shrunk and the bowel tumour has changed colour (good sign apparently). So he is responding well to treatment with so far only niggly side effects. So treatment will continue for a few more months (which isn't as bad as it sounds so far) then he'll be on a break with monitoring until the tumours show signs that they need further zapping, when they'll repeat a few courses of the treatment.

I would never have believed 3 months ago that the above was good news, but it is...in the scheme of things.

I've always thought this is a biggie for teachers - the career progression is not generally into more advanced teaching but in to managing departments and schools which I would have thought were very different skills.

It tended to be that way, but there are some more advanced teaching roles now. All my friends who were good teachers either ended up as advisers or heads.....or they left and did something different & more profitable! I made the conscious decision to remain a 'teacher,' though I stepped up to do deputy head three times, which wasn't that onerous (just got flak from both sides!:()

We had a head who was good at managing money and the paperwork, but awful in his handling of kids & staff. It was embarrassing when we had special Activity Weeks, because he would join in, and yours truly would be charged with making the official video. I always tried to film his class close up, doing somehing highly focused, as his abysmal teaching style was magnified when recorded and placed alongside excerpts from other highly skilled practitioners.

Mind you, I spent most of my career thinking I was the best, but when performance management came along and I found myself assessing my colleagues' work, I suddenly realised I wasn't that special! :o

When I was growing up, we thought the future would have robots as domestic servants, but computers would be the size of rooms. Thanks a bunch, Tomorrow's World!

Turns out robots are only in factories or fighting on TV as entertainment , but computers are everywhere - over a billion of them. I was shocked at one point to read that because of their durability more than one in every five computers was a mac.

This is the guy who put these computers in our houses.

Hats off to the fellow. The world.needs more people like him,

Congratulations .... you get to keep your old :)
Mine deteriorated from day 1 when they first found out and were first handed the first bag of drugs which would potentially slow/freeze growth .... immediately the old couldn't taste food correctly and it was all downhill from there.

Sounds like your old's going to be OK.

    Good luck with future treatments/etc.

    Thanks.

I'd forgotten about the taste thing till you mentioned it. Dad had that at the start, but its got better now. Completely put him off track, he was convinced all he had was an abcess that effected his taste buds at first. Turned out he had both.

On a lighter note, was this the world we thought we'd end up in rather than Steve Jobs' world of domestic computers.

For those of you following the story of my PV panels...
They've now been in operation a whole month. I've generated 379.6kWh and will be paid £170.25 for it.
Yield was best last week, although peak powers were significantly down - the panels are less efficient when they get hot. My friend at work with the more expensive Sanyo panels has not seen such a significant dropping off of peak power on hot days. I want to ask my next door neighbour for his data for comparison - he has Sanyo panels, but obviously he's had the same weather as me, whereas my work friend lives miles away.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)
