The old's spent the day sorting out stuff to give away; had a friend of theirs round today to pick up some of their favourite pieces... old stuff they've had years, that's "good" but surplus to requirements where they're going :(

Can you get them to give away the gas fire?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

No... they like it .... and it's there and has a back boiler that runs the central heating. They wouldn't be able to bear the disruption/etc at this time either.

Gas leak alarms start from under £10 on ebay.

Totally agree. But an explosive mixture is probably around 30% gas, and we've seen pictures of Ronan Point, so we know that a gas explosion can literally bring the house down.

You can get flame out cookers now, and in fact all new ones have to be. It's time the gas fires in your house were removed, at great expense and with many protests from the olds. I am sure they are condemnable if you let a gas safe man near them.

Oh absolutely. When I said "don't worry" I meant "don't worry that inhaling gas this afternoon has poisoned them in a way you can't yet see" not at all "don't worry that they may do this again". Anything you can do to make sure the gas can only ever be either out or lit would be a good thing.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Is it possible to get some sort of lock to prevent the olds turning the fire off and on?

No... they'd freeze to death if I did that :)

A person has a right, in their own home, to turn on their heating :)

I'm 100% for independence..... I just monitor it 23 hours/day.... I must have been having an hour off :)

I had kids reading to me today for the Summer Reading Challenge. One of them told me the story of Hamish the Hammerhead Shark. But he was a nice shark apparently....

Off out tonight. Church is having a party at the local open air swimming pool. They've block booked it. Kids (and hardy adults) will go in the (heated) water, and the rest of us will lounge around on the side talking to each other. I don't do open air swimming unless it is truly roasting weather, which obviously at 7pm it isn't, so I've been putting my foot down at DD's pleading for me to go in with them. Normally, my kids don't want to go to anything like that - church afternoon picnic in the park no thanks etc - but because this is a swimming pool they're up for it. So I get to go and chat to my friends without kids whining that they want to go home. Yay! £7 per family to get in and bring your own food/drink, so no too expensive either.

Sounds like great fun although they appear to have picked the coldest July day ever for it :(

Viva we will be going to the Library on Tuesday to start the challenge - DD1 will be great, DD2 wants to be a fluent reader too but still struggles and DS will cause havoc as usual by throwing all the books on the floor. Will you be there to help us?

    I think....
