I've given up with the alarm clock now....thinking about washing machines and even a tumble drier.

Did you have a lovely holiday NDG?

She outlived all her children, apart from King John and Queen Eleanor of Castile. John survived her by 14 years, and Eleanor by 10.

    One hell of a woman!

TBH, she wasn't my Uncle will though, depsite the similarities! There i a lot of stuff about her here in wilts. :)

I've spent nearly £300 so far on school uniform for ONE child today. Still haven't got a blazer, I'm hoping the school second hand shop will reveal treasure. Needed for 'best' only = ridiculous.

Isaac's school (being trendy and Islington-ish) doesn't have uniform - and his teacher isn't Mrs Smith, she's Cindy. Last year he had Anna.

School uniform can cost the earth. When my brother started at Dulwich Prep when he was 7, he had to wear shorts (all year round), tie (guess who had to do that), knee-high socks, garters, and a dry-clean-only blazer. The idea of putting 7 year old boys in dry-clean-only clothes is insane.

When I went to the establishment that was a cross between a nunnery and Holloway nick, the uniform we required (3 different ones altogether, plus 5 sports uniforms) cost £2,400 new. And that was in 1988. So I had entirely second-hand. We had to have so much of it that it never got worn out at all.

Amazing how the old dry clean uniforms coped. Our school uniform was ridiculously tailored to each actiity you did...not just badges, but socks and sashes and colours for sports teams and ositions of responsibility....meaning that we al looked slightly diferent. My kilt and jumper certainly lasted me the whle way through school and I wore the jumper to muck out in for a few years afterwards...but rejoice in destroying the bloody awful skirt.....and sold the blazer .

I don't do posh, blonde or public school Luckily I was there with my GF which (mostly) stopped me from straying.

Strike out on two out of three for me - fair-haired and public school here. What's wrong with us, anyway?

The "mostly" stopped you from straying sounds dodgy.........

I found this for my parents to heat their pool using their solar panels:

However they don't make sense if you have mains gas.
    I think....

Hi well read nice people. There's a book that I've seen and fancy reading and I wondered if any of you had come across it before, it's called 'The Sleeper Awakes' and its by HG Wells. I like Wells's work and the premise sounds fascinating. I think I'm going through a bit of a dystopian stage at the moment and this looks like it will fit right in.

  • I wonder if people replace because of increased movement/home changes. I mean...if you don't upstae your kitchen, as people didn't, the fridge will always fit...now people tend to update more things might not fit more. I can't imagine going through these stressful choices out of ''fun''..though accept that the fashion of time is thus.

I have no idea why people replace kitchens and bathrooms regularly - a lot of expense, and endless hassle.

Mr Spirit had had sloe whisky on a shoot which inspired this a couple of years ago. It is delicious and I am going to pick our sloes this weekend,I had already decided I could not be bothered but I have changed my mind.

A bit early for sloe picking - they won't be ripe yet?

Copied from my post last month:

Making sloe gin from wild berries in the hedgerows

Sloe jelly – harvesting the hedgerows
