Does it help at all that you now know what is going on and have some support or is it all just a shock?
I've had a tough 2 weeks, not mentioned it here... but it's now confirmed I am managing an end of life situation. The M nurse will be arriving tomorrow/Friday to sort out care etc, attendance allowance will be sorted (terminal/automatic) and I guess I'm going to be quite busy with the various/changing needs around me ... until. And I don't know when until is... until. But it's probably not this month, but I don't think Xmas plans will be needed.
    I think....

Pastures, how rotten for you. I'm glad that M is now visiting and that attendance allowance will be automatic. Hopefully they will also be advising how to get the allowance for the other "old". The whole "I don't know how long it will be" thing will be tough on you Pastures and you'll possibly find yourself in a situation where you are lacking black and white answers. Unfortunately this is often how things go. When my aunt was dying and I was sitting with my cousin, they wouldn't tell us. When I was sitting with my cousin's daughter when her dad was dying they told her it would be weeks and in reality it was days. It is very hard.

If you want to sound off, blow a gasket, kick a metaphorical cat or whatever, we're all here for you.

I feel bad about going OT but I need to decide today re bedroom lighting -not choosing fittings but where to put wiring.

It is a 30s semi and is generally 'modern/minimal' rather than 'plush' or anything - would it be worth going for multiple recessed spots or would a centre light fitting be sufficient / better. Should I also add wall lights? I am concerned about the latter as I want to leave the bed position flexible so I am not sure that putting lights on one or more walls might be a bad idea. Thoughts?

Wall lights are very in keeping with the age of the house and would look great, but then so can recessed lights and individual pendants. The great interior designers I've worked alongside have said interior lighting should not be considered in isolation. So another question would be what type of furniture are you going for? If you are going for a contemporary look, then recessed lights would look great, whereas a more traditional pendant may work better with early 20th century furniture or older, though its hard to say for sure without knowing what you are planning. Also think about how you use the space. I tried spots in my old kitchen for example but found out that it left me with dark spots where I had to add lighting so as not to end up with dark recesses, so that's something else you may want to consider.

I also couldn't have a bedroom without a bedside light each.

1930s inspired centre light with dimmer switch for mood?

Personally I'm not keen on spot lights in bedrooms and prefer table lamps to wall lights...in most setings. Much lovelier, and as you say, more flexible.
we're having our room sockiets wired to a light switch with the main light switch so that we can turn the lamps on as an alternative to main lights.

Both. And it's sad to see the deterioration in front of you.

One's visited/left, but is on the case.... and now kicking the butt of the other one. I have to go away, which was mentioned some time back, so one might be covering that week.... but after that I was doing a whole holiday/round robin, that's now probably cancelled.

I don't see the need for wall lights in the bedroom. The only thing they are useful for is to read in bed, and table lamps do that job much better.

I think a central light or recessed spots would be fine, I would make sure there is a light switch near the bed as well as by the door.

Poor you. My dad died of Alzheimer's and in some ways the worst thing is watching the decline, knowing it can only go one way.

My mum looked after my Dad and joining a local support group helped her a lot as she often ended up having feelings your not 'supposed' to have. It helped her to find out that lots of other people were cross at the OH for getting ill and things like that.

Get as much help as you can is my advice. From family and the state. If there is a support charity for the condition they should be able to help with that.
