I'm tempted by white - currently we are a sort of beige/creamy/light magnolia colour and our semi-neighbour is a very similar but slightly different colour - rest of the street (on the painted bits) is mostly white.

Re paint. Unless you hit one of the periodical sales at the big sheds, your tradies should be able to get it for you at a discount. My brother and dad, who are totally a*al when it comes to paint, say that you should get the trade Weathershield rather than standard as it lasts longer and needs doing less often. With that in mind you can generally only get pure brilliant white trade at the retail sheds anyway. Trade paint should last 2 years longer.
    I think....

so, missing a wedding this weekend. bride and groom not going on honeymoon and i'd like to get them something. flowers? chocolates? anything less trite?

i'd get it delivered to them to arrive next week after their feet have touched the earth after the excitement.

Yep and I enjoyed it too for the 18 months I lived there, but I prefer not living there and just visiting friends instead.
The constant bustle is tiring after a while, the lack of open spaces without a trip, the lack of a garden all outweigh the fun of the inordinate amount of totty and the inordinate number of pubs.
After all I'm only allowed one at a time of those nowadays and the mrs seems to think she's got first dibs on me anyway. :D

Each to his own - I'm happy living in London, and visiting elsewhere!

I've never found the totty terribly interesting, though.....

Pastures, don't worry about well old missing the last visit. From experience you will get at least 24 hours notice and we got a very acurate 60 hour warning.
This morning we were told "not today/tomorrow"; this afternoon we were asked if we want a call before or after; two hours after being asked I got that call; went back (one hour) and sat for the next 5.5 hours before leaving...... so it's imminent.

Regarding the well old's mobility, might it be an idea to throw money at the problem and get one of these delivered?
Can't have a delivery if we're not here when it comes; that's part of the problem - being here and there, yet nowhere specific.

Amazon might also be your answer for the microwave.
Can't have deliveries... and stuff's changed today.

dog dog and I slept for hours. very lazy:o.

Also, I've been thinking about the riots. I'd like to think I wouldn't have stolen anything in that position. If I were there. But I can't say 100% I wouldn't, or at least I wouldn't sort of want to. I wouldn't go to people rampaging through the streets, I wouldn't like the poverty of ambition or the morality of someone who can steal like that, and I'm not a tv person, but if I were walking home and the wondows were smashed in, everything but one or two nice little tvs left.....I'm trying to imagine whether or not I could go in and get one. I just don't know. I know I want the answer to be no, but perhaps the slight resentment of others who have got something for nothing suggests I might not be as good as I want to be.

I think I'm good. I remember when, as a teenager, the fag machine outside the town's cafe broke and the packets spilled out on the pavement. My mates helped themselves to one or two packs, not the whole lot. Meanwhile, I walked inside to tell the owner, but I did it slowly, because I knew he was filthy rich! :rotfl:

Here, there's no need to steal TVs. I picked up a nice little Sony portable in the recycling shop, guaranteed for 3 months, for a fiver! Shortly after, down at the dump, I had a choice of two for my daughter to take to uni, courtesy of a hotelier who thought she'd have to go flat screen.

We don't know hardship in this country, unless we're talking about emotional bankruptcy. ;)

I agree Dave. For me the acid test is this: you find a wallet with no ID in it but a wad of cash. Do you a) hand it in to the police; or b) keep it. If you answer a without thinking you are unlikely to worry about looting a TV, if you're tempted by b or say it outright on the other hand....
Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

PN, I just want to say I'll be thinking of you and the others in your family today. I'm sure we all will be. :)

That's raised an interesting thought. Twice in the last decade or so we have found money blowing around on the street (I'm talking about £15 and £50) and twice the police have told us to keep it, noted the details and said they'd send the owner round if the loss & location was reported. That comes pretty close to saying, "I'd just hang on to it, mate."

I can understand the police not wanting to be involved with lost property issues when they have more major things pressing, but their attitude here could be seen as encouraging others to care less about their neighbours.

Two years ago, I was threatened with physical violence in broad daylight, which was witnessed, but no one came to my aid. When I contacted the police, I was told the person concerned could not be cautioned, but would have to be arrested and there would be " a lot of paperwork."

So, it was me who was then faced with the decision about whether to have them arrested or not. Knowing the person was in a highly emotional state at the time, and because I was right in the middle of my removal down here, I decided to let it go, but that wasn't something I was entirely comfortable with.

Later, Victim Support contacted me. They were willing to try various approaches to make me feel better, but I was not particularly bothered by the incident itself, as I'd handled that quite well. So, I just told them that, to my mind, their role wasn't picking up the bits after the police had failed people. :(

If we get the police we deserve, maybe the police get the public they deserve too.

    Brilliant post.:T
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.
