Spent yesterday at work wandering around aimlessly turning on and off taps in the hopes of a miracle cure. Seems something crucial in the water tank packed up some time ago but its taken the entire summer holiday for the rentals to use the 2000 or so gallons that it holds in order to discover this. Means work is mostly waterless and will remain so until a visit from a plumber on tuesday. Sadly I have three working loos and two functional sinks which means I can still get on with some work even if it means boiling the kettle a heck of a lot. Bah.

Spent the entire afternoon in Mr Ts. DD2 needs glasses and decided which glasses she was having by trying on every pair they had in her size. OH was the complete opposite. He tried on half a dozen pairs but kept finding the frames he liked weren't compatible with his eyeballs and had to choose again. Ended up getting him two pairs thanks to the bogof promotion which applies to frames only, not the expensive lense coatings... mutter mutter.... parted with almost my entire stash of clubcard vouchers and four quid of cold hard cash. Will be livid if he leaves these lying around for the hound from hell to retrieve.

Refrained from spending anything else in store. Couldn't wait to get out of there. Came home. Threw dinner together using up all the sad looking stuff in the fridge and then vegged out for what was left of the evening. Struggled to stay awake. THis working for a living malarky is exhausting when you've got out of the habit of doing it.

Plans for today involve a morning stint at work followed by an afternoon of country marketing at the village fete which looks like being rather quiet if the rain keeps hammering down at its present level. After that I need to find a travel lodge or some such with free rooms vaguely near the East of England showground for something less than £60 a night as OH has discovered he has a day off co-inciding with a Land Rover Show. The alternative is to drive there and back in a day which would take 8 or so hours assuming theres minimal traffic which does not appeal in the slightest. Sadly someone will have to stop at home with the geriatric hound because it would involve far too much walking for her and besides a bootful of dog would highly curtail his shopping. Aw shucks.

Would these be covered on your contents insurance for replacement if damaged? Mine are. Oops but then maybe that is an NZ thing Doh!

Why are you entertaining him even going? Are you going to ask him what he is going to SELL to fund his buying spree, or (evil grin) are you just going to sell things of his he hasn't used for a year or more whilst he is away?

He'll enjoy it. Simples. Hes trying v. hard at the mo. and it gives me a weekend of peace besides which the idea of lugging large parts several thousand metres from the stalls to the car park will put him off so his spending won't be that bad at all.

Good idea. If you were with him he would expect you to help carry I guess.

I love my OH very much but it is always nice to have time apart to have our own space. I know that I am not dealing with some of the issues that you are but even so I think we all have foibles that niggle our respected OHs so time apart is a good thing. Plus if he is taking Hound from Hell and DDs then it will be a great reason for him to keep on the straight and narrow.

However the two of you choose to get through the difficulties I wish you well.

Hotel now booked. Thanks MrsMoo2U! DD1 is most excited to be going whilst DD2 is even more excited about not going and is trying to come up with the perfect sibling free weekend. It seems to involve much bike riding and McDonalds fodder.

Spent a very dull morning at school cleaning carpets using a kettle. Most tedious. Today looks like being just the same. Bah

Spent the afternoon at the village festival. Only sold four jars of jam. The weather was abysmal and they had five other stalls selling jam which made up 50% of the food stalls. Wish I'd known that in the first place. DD1 had a great time wandering around. Met loads of school friends and picked up an info pack on the cadet force which she was most miffed about not being old enough to join.

Watched the very bizarre comedy proms and then attempted to get some sleep. Failed miserably. The giant marquee in the field next door sprang to life at 9pm with the village rave which continued until 5am. Am totally and utterly kettled. Fortunately it was better supervised than the last one and we didn't end up with police cars whizzingup and down the road all night. May have something to do with the electric fences being left on to keep out the kids from other local villages. The Young Farmers most definately know how to party.

Despite me randomly turning on taps the water still refuses to work anywhere other than the farthest flung corners of the building. Spent far too much time sitting in the staffroom reading geriatric copies of Hello! and Ok! and various other slag mags with ! in their titles. Pathetically little achieved. Cleared up several bin bags of wind evicted apples. Have happy chooks and a slow cooker full ready to scoff with ice cream. Fridge is also heaving. Will make apple chutney in the not too distant future. Still have to do something with Saturdays greengages but have no enthusiasm whatsoever today.

Spent the afternoon watching DD1 cross the road. Shes getting much more confident which is just as well as she has to do it on her own next week. Paranoia that she'll turn into a pavement pizza the first time I'm not there has yet to set in. No doubt it will.

I am sure that she will be fine. But also that there will be a few scares. I too lived in a village where we had to cross the main road to get to the bus stop each morning. It did take a little while to get sorted. But I am still here. In other news I have got a medium large size bag of small oranges and lemons, and want a orange and lemon marmalade recipes that isn't too much of a faff, and that will set! as last year mine didn't. I am asking you and Pippilongstocking, as I figure you regularly do preserving, so would no a good recipe. There was one I saw on the net last night that looked good, as there was no soaking, but I think I will have to get a muslin bag though...... sigh.
    thanks in advance

Muslin bag? Qu'est ce que c'est? Chunk of knackered pale coloured t-shirt or shirt or any other cotton item alternatively a J-cloth all do exactly the same job.

Recipes are all much of a muchness. Peel roughly equal quantities of fruit, chop peel, remove pith and pips and bung in muslin (or whatever) bag, chop fruit. Lob in slowcooker for several hours with approx 1 litre of water per kilo (you can always add more liquid at a later stage if your slowcooker is full). Remove bag and squeeze out juice. Transfer to pan (adding whatever water you couldn't get in slowcooker). Bring to boil. Add same weight of sugar as fruit. Check for wrinkles on a frozen plate when it starts to thicken.
