What about a breakaway collar? Given their size, you may get away with a cat one, but they're made for dogs too. Google for "pet keepsafe collar" or "dog breakaway collar" for places to buy them. Just use the breakaway collar in the house but remove and use a harness on walks (might be a good idea to get tags made for each of them so you don't forget to switch them over)

Thanks, I've just Googled it. I've never heard of those collars before. I'm going to get them one of those if I can find one that fits. I've bought the XS harness (smallest available) and even that is a bit big for them but they'll grow into it.

He is chipped any way, a trip to any vets will reveal the identity of the registered keeper.

No seriously - you REALLY expect someone finding your dog and making an effort to take it to the vets to be scanned to get your details? Really?

Zara has my address, phone number ad some other details.

Where we walk we very often "find" lost dogs - pick the collar, call the owner and very often they are just on the other side of the green/park or live locally. Calling the owner's number/walking the dog back to his/her house and leaving with neighbours if owner is not home/does not pick up the phone is what I can do.

Taking a strange dog home with me and/or taking it to the vets to be scanned - sorry can not as Zara does not allow other dogs to come in AND I have no transport to take dog to a vet to be scanned.

Pls, be a bit REALISTIC as what you can/can not expect people to do when your dog gets lost to help you reunite the dog with you.

and perhaps also to say that the chip has no legality! I know Dogs Trust for one have been saying that all dogs should be microchipped.
Incidentally do you realise that the chips can migrate? They are not always where you expect them to be which creates a problem for anyone scanning. (Been there, done it, bought the tee shirt! After about 14 months discovered my chipped dog didn't actually have one at all!) When your dog has a check up , especially in the first year or so just ask the vet to scan the chip too

I've just seen this thread.... after i had ordered an id tag for my dog.
I've put his name and phone numbers.. didn't put the address as i think that if sbdy find him they are more likely to phone for you to pick him/her up than travel to your address. Hadn't realised about the law though but i think that will do for the moment...

Anyone know where I can get a puppy safety / breakaway collar as suggested above? I have been to all the local pets shops and even pets at home but none sell them. I have searched all over online too but having no luck.

By law you can just have the house number & postcode on a collar which is what I do along with home & mobile phone numbers x

Mine has my initial and surname (I've got a surname that could be mistaken for a human or canine first name so have my initial on there to try to make it clear it's NOT the dog's name), house no, street name, postcode, landline and mobile numbers, and I am neutered and microchipped... mainly cos one of them's a greyhound who does tend to attract some attention I'm not comfortable with. Plus I wanted to get as much on them as I could for value for money!

I ordered my puppies new tags a few days ago and thought it would be best to put their initial in brackets, then my initial and surname. Full address with postcode and mobile phone number.
The dogs initial was so I would know who's harness is who's since they are identical but I think it's also a good idea for those that do not wish to put their pets name on the tag.
