Tag on a dog and details to put on it?

I think the reasonings are that if someone steals the dog, and they know its name, its far easier to pretend its theirs as it will respond to its name.
Doesn't apply to my dog however! He responds to my partner and I saying his name, but ignores everyone else! He's 4 1/2, but has only had this name for 6 months (rescue) so it could change as time goes on, but for now, I'm comfortable with his name being on his tag. Please excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!0 -

A little yorkie got out of his garden nearby, and ended up hiding in a scrapyard under some scrap cars. The owner was absolutely frantic, had posters up everywhere, and a scrapyard worker spotted the dog and rang the number. He tried everything to entice the dog out, but it was just too terrified. The owner hurried there, but told the worker the dog's name on the phone.
When the worker called the dog by name, he came out, still petrified but obviously reassured by the sound of his name. When the owner arrived the poor thing had been given water and was having a much needed cuddle.0 -
Thing is though, the bloke has to be told the dogs name because he couldn't get hold of it, surely that's the same for any dog, you don't know it's name til you have hold if it to read the tag, and by that time, dognappers don't need to know it's name, cos they already have hold of the dog.... It's one of those eternal paradoxesPlease excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!0

How do you attach a lead to their harness? Is there really no D-ring or adjuster you can attach a tag to??
Here you go, these are the ones I was thinking ofhttp://www.indigocollartags.com/Engraved_Collar_Tags.shtml#AtTheTop
Thanks very much for the links, bagginslover- I was thinking of sewing tags onto the dogs' harness but the open ended design in your 2nd link looks much easier to fit.0 -

After reading this thread I'm now deciding what details to put on my puppies tags. I have just bought two little Yorkie pups and will be getting them microchipped in the near future. I have bought them a harness as I refuse to put collars on them after the recent loss of my Yorkie that had to be put to sleep because he had a collapsed trachea. Collars can press against the trachea causing it to collapse so I will now only put harnesses on my dogs.
I know it's the law for dogs to have ID tags but if my dogs managed to escape from the garden they wouldn't be wearing their harness so the ID tags are a bit useless for this - The reason why I will have them both microchipped. I wouldnt even like to put a collar on them at the moment as they may get their paws or something else caught with them only being 11 weeks old.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
Vicx, would it not be possible for them to have a collar but for you never to attach a lead to it and only use the harness for that? Is it just the pulling on a collar whilst on a lead that causes the collapsed trachea? (I genuinely dont know )Then they can have the tags still? What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0

Trachea collapse is common is small breed dogs such as Yorkshire Terriers. I had never heard of it until I had to have my Yorkie put to sleep 5 month ago. He did pull on the lead so that will have made his condition worse.
I will consider collars when the pups are a bit older but still use the harness with the lead. I'm just worried they might get their paws or something else caught in their collar so don't want to put a collar on them at the moment.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
Unfortunately it's the law for a dog to wear a collar and tag whilst in a public place http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1992/901/article/2/made0

What about a breakaway collar? Given their size, you may get away with a cat one, but they're made for dogs too. Google for "pet keepsafe collar" or "dog breakaway collar" for places to buy them. Just use the breakaway collar in the house but remove and use a harness on walks (might be a good idea to get tags made for each of them so you don't forget to switch them over)0
