On the basis of comparing it with one of the least impressive competitors?

RIM are the people begging for a comparison with the iPad. They've been angling themselves as the "serious alternative" for some time now. Under those circumstances its entirely reasonable to both compare them and note where the playbook is lacking.

As an ipad alternative, I quite liked the Xoom. It's the only android tablet that I felt I could be happy buying

It is, but not excluding other competitors if you're going (as the poster did) claim the top spot for the iPad.

I seriously considered the Zoom before deciding to buy the Asus Transformer instead. I'm delighted with my choice.

I have been considering the Xoom, but they seem to be seriously behind on software updates and haven't even got the SD card slot working yet, andit is so heavy!

With the transformer, I heard that there are battery issues with the keyboard dock. Did you get the dock and if so have you had any problems with it?

Yes, I have the dock. There is a minor issue with battery drain if the tablet is switched off and left docked, but it takes several days to drain. Neither the tablet nor the dock seem to consume any power when off and disconnected from each other, so it seems like a firmware issue which is keeping something on in a low power state.

Other than that, it's a truly lovely piece of kit - a table when you want a tablet and a netbook/laptop when your keyboard needs dictate. Everything works and updates seem timely so far. I'm happy.

I considered trading my Ipad for a Transformer, but decided I couldn't deal with the lag.

I don't see any advantage a tablet has over my netbook and phone for when I'm away and my laptop in the house. If I had to get one it would probably be the transformer, though the acer one seems good as well. I wouldn't consider an ipad, I wouldn't even look at one.
  • I think a better question might be: can you afford it?

they are the most fun, practical tablet on the market. the same way people with android phones "say" they prefer to them to the IPhone.

if you can afford one, they are great little devices.

How about battery life, as well as netbooks generally being a bit rubbish?
