Well Ive just received my Sony card (see first post) and according to

    IT IS GENUINE!

If its a fake then how can you spot it?!

OK, so it didnt come in Sony packaging, just the cases but the card looks fine!

I got it from Digital Premier UK.

Its fake, as I said I have bought from them. First one came in packaging with mis-spelling etc, the second came in little plastic sleeve thing. Alot of sellers have started removing them from the blister packs (if they even came in one in the first place) so there are less tell tale signs that they are fake. They both work fine - my oldest fake card (from a seller on ebay) is about 18 months old now (bought it last year in june/july).

This will be a fake. I bought a 2gb Sandisk from Amazon Marketplace and got a fake Sony 2gb with 1,949mb free.

Its normal to have less than 2GB showing. I think it reserves some ora section is unwritable. That doesnt mean it is fake.

True, but genuine cards usually show up as having capacity of 1909 or 1910MB. A capacity of 1949MB would be a strong indication that it's probably a fake.

I have just bought a genuine Sandisk 2Gb for 24 quid here in Canada. I think prices of these will drop soonish worldwide once the 4gb card becomes more popular.

There don't seem to be any Sony memory sticks supplied and sold by Amazon UK. So has Amazon invented another selling category in addition to Amazon Marketplace???

Or will it take retailer responsibility for the products it features that are not Marketplace-supplied but, equally, are not Amazon UK supplied, either?

If anyone has any experience of this, I for one would be glad to hear about it.

I feel sorry for you LouLou. Unless someone is totally clued up on memory sticks how can you distinguish a real from a fake? I think Amazon should take responsibility here and reimburse you. Why don't you contact Sony and warn them about this dodgy company?

I'm telling myself that they (the Amazon Marketplace seller) are busy with the holiday season and I'll hear something soon. (They told me to return the dodgy card back to them btw, in case you're thinking I'm daft :) )!

Amazon were apologetic but wouldn't take responsibility, which is fair enough.

I'm going mad though..I've always got headphones stuck to my ears when I'm out and about!!

This is the thread where I posted originally..it might have additional info on how to spot fake cards.. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=307406

If you paid by credit card to Amazon, can't you go back to your credit card company and demand that they refund you for selling you a fake product?

If it didn't come in Sony packaging then it's a fake. The quality of the packaging (it should come with long straight plastic welds, the fakes tend to have round spot welds) is the first giveaway that these are not genuine, which as Shane says is why sellers have started to remove them from the packs.

  • The link between counterfeit goods and serious organised crime is well-established. Maybe your money isn't going in that direction, but maybe it is. You don't know. And the shyster you bought from probably doesn't know either.

Absolute crap. This is like the adverts before the movies which claim that paying £3 for a pirated movie lets warlords buy guns.

How about we turn that ridiculously far-fetched notion around and state that buying genuine Sony goods feeds the drug barons? With the massive cocaine habits of company execs and movie stars the money supply has to come from somewhere,in this case original Sony DVDs and memory sticks.

I personally don't give a chuff if it's genuine as long as it works. The only reason memory sticks are more expensive than SD is because of Sonys protectionist attitude towards their market. Using their own proprietary sticks doesn't do anything for the consumer apart from make the products more expensive. If hooky memory sticks are bringing the price down then the producers are doing us all a favour.

I would argues there's nothing wrong with pirated movies, appart from the one's filmed in the cinemas. Also DVD-R's will not last as long as studio recorded ones.

But think for a minute. A 2gb memory card is a sophisticated piece of equipment. Do you genuinely think fakers are able to make a fully functioning 2gb card from scratch?!

One idea I have read (i am not fully conversant with the technology so do not know) is that 1gb cards can be reformatted (like f disk) to have a false size like 2gb. All it takes is a quick re-print of the card. Now I think it's something like the card can take 2gb but it no longer has any error correction or something. I could be wrong. So the card works as expected, but is nowhere near as safe.

But either way buying fake cards knowingly is rather stupid and risky. A fake card is a fake card and you do not know how it was made.

I highly doubt that fakes bring prices down. It is generally market demand and mfr cost that determines prices to customers.

If you knowingly buy a fake card and lose valuable photographs I'll just laugh at their stupidity. This is what it's about at the end of the day. If someone unknowingly buys a fake card I feel very sorry for them.
