Sony 2gb Memory Stick Pro Duo - £22

Options
Just found these sellers in Amazon market place selling 2gb Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo cards for less than half the price of anywhere else. Surely they can't be fakes? Or can they?

Nonetheless, it's an absolute steal.

Edit, they are £21 and not £22 but not sure how much delivery is because I've not bought one yet.

  • apart from the sony badge on the front what is different to an actual sony and a fake if it was a fake? are they slower? more likely to go faulty?

seems a very good price and might go for one for my psp

Sorry guys but these are fakes - ALL sellers who sell at around that price on amazon marketplace and ebay are selling fakes that are imported from China.
I would have liked to say that my statement was based on pure cost-reasoning and paranoia but unfortunately I have purchased many of these and they have all been fake.
On EVERY occasion I have mailed the seller to say they have sold counterfeit goods and none have ever denied it. The usual response is "All my cards come from China, I will refund" but being the type of people to knowingly sell fakes who is to say that they will not simply keep both the returned card and your money.

The only good news I can give is that all the cards I have received have actually been the correct capacity of either 1GB or 2GB (some fakes have much small memory but have hacked firmware making them display 1GB or 2GB).
It seems that the failure rate on these is shockingly high but again from experience I can say if they last over two weeks you should find them maybe having a fairly decent lifespan.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but as I said I have also been burnt.
  • Sorry forgot to add the detail for identifying.

The major give away is the packaging - dot type seals on fakes where as genuine Sony's have Staple sized seals or full-length seals.
Some of my fakes even have spelling errors like "Optimum for recording of High pixel still images and High quality mowing images"

Here are some links detailing other methods I used to identify fakes (before opening the casings for the majority)

  • Having had a few off ebay... ;-)

    1. Slower

    2. Capacity not always as stated

    3. No warranty

    4. Corrupt data if you fill the card, rather than telling you its full

    5. Wont last as long

    6. If your not happy - you never get a refund.....card are usually
    from Hong Kong, etc

So do you really save in the long run...?
you might end up buying more than one fake...
for the same life time of you SONY card...

    Regards

Thanks for this tightasagnatschuff, though you made me break out in a cold sweat!! I bought a 2GB card for my Sony Ericsson k750i, from Amazon Marketplace in January, for £66.49. (From tecknet-online).

I'm looking at the ebay guide you posted.

At the back of the card the "S"s aren't in italic (fake)..but the "Made In Japan" is longer than "ICES" number (genuine). My capacity shows as 1910MB (genuine). The "/" doesn't look longer (genuine).

"Made In Japan" has a dot next to it(?).

On another page it says the card should be abrasive, rather than slick, which mine is (fake). http://pspupdates.qj.net/Real-V-S-Fake-Inside-The-Memory-Sticks/pg/49/aid/18198

The card seems to fill ok.

The packaging (mine is the high-speed card) doesn't have the two horizontal seals at the top, and they're definitely not staple-sized (fake!!). :(

You think it sounds like a fake card? Looks pretty conclusive really!

If it is, I'm complaining to amazon and the seller.
