Just do not buy the fakes. You're not getting the product you're paying for.

I think I have ended up with a fake I bought on ebay but its not working right...how can you tell if the card you get is a fake ? It was suppose to be a Sony 2GB card..

also guys be careful of any positive feedback, as most feedback is left a few days after a product is recieved. The problems with the memory card may not be evident till after a FEW WEEKS.

By that stage positive feedback had been left!!
  • What sort of problems should one look out for? I've got one genuine stick and one fake stick. The only difference between them is the speed of data transfer. The fake is slower, but not by a huge margin. I've been using both sticks for 4 months now.

Err. The Sony brand are MUCH more expensive than the fake ones, and if the fakes work just as fine, I dont see why I should allow Sony to monopolise on them, the price difference is HUGE

True, but think of it this way.

If it's fake you're still paying way over the odds. A fake costs a lot less to manufacture than a Sony brand. I don't like being ripped off by the big companies either but buying a cheap fake is no better... You're still being ripped off.

1 - Selling fakes is effectively theft - of Sony's (or Sandisk's) brand name and your trust.

2 - If they go wrong or you realised you've been sold a pup, you're far less likely to have any comeback.

3 - If they go wrong they could, potentially, damage your machine, and your warranty will almost definitely be worthless.

4 - Do you know where your money is going when you buy fakes? Are you funding any more disturbing activities? e.g. terrorism, drug dealing, organised crime etc?

5 - Sometimes cards sold as, for example, 2gb have false partitions installed so they show up on the psp/pc as having that capacity, but try actually filling them and you find out that the true size is more like 256Mb.

    Your choice, I guess...

    Very tue.

Not true if you buy via amazon or any other legitimate company. If you have a problem with something you bought, you go back to where you bought it, not to the manufacturer.
3 - If they go wrong they could, potentially, damage your machine, and your warranty will almost definitely be worthless.

No more so than if a non-fake goes ti ts up. As for warranty being worthless, complete b/s. When has any company done a complete item breakdown / forensic audit on a returned item??? I do them for work for cases running into the £100k+, but for something low value like a PSP or digital camera claim... it would not be cost effective, hence it would never happen, hence any damage from fake memory will be treated no different from damaged caused by a non fake card. Any damage as a direct result of using fake mem duos is EXTREMELY unlikely in the first place.
4 - Do you know where your money is going when you buy fakes? Are you funding any more disturbing activities? e.g. terrorism, drug dealing, organised crime etc?

HAHAHAHA, omg I hope for your sake you don't seriously believe this. The money from these will be going to some dude buying booze, fags, fast cars and even faster women. Terrorism?!?!?!?!? for cocaine and herorin, yes, but for fake memory sticks... gimme a break.
5 - Sometimes cards sold as, for example, 2gb have false partitions installed so they show up on the psp/pc as having that capacity, but try actually filling them and you find out that the true size is more like 256Mb.

Nope. The vast majority of fake mem sticks / mem duos are fine.
    Your choice, I guess...

Agree with that, but let's not scare munger here. As I've said, I've got some fakes memory sticks which I've heavily used for a long time and they are no worse than the far more expensive real ones. Same for my family and friends. I originally bought them without knowing they were fake, I even asked the seller, but to answer the question, how do you tell... the only way is the price. If it's much, much cheaper than RRP, it is either a fake or stolen. Sony has set a very high license fee on memory sticks and that is why they are so expensive and recommended retail at such a high price when compaired to say SD, USB or CF memory cards.

At the moment, the price delta of real memory stick duos with fakes is sufficiently large to feed the demand for "fakes". Until this gap closes, people will continue to buy fakes.
