That's the point they were making though... a dual carriageway IS NOT defined as a road having two lanes. So the clue isn't in the name.pitkin2020 wrote: »If it only has one lane per direction then clearly its not a dual carriage way so maximum speed would be 60, if its a dual carriage way (clue is in the name) then if national speed limit applies its 70.0 -

A lane is not a carriageway - it's a lane. A carriageway is one kerb to another. If there's a physical barrier of any kind between tarmac where traffic travels in opposite directions, it's the same as a kerb. As there are 4 kerbs, there are two carriageways.
Conversely, a road with two (or more) lanes in each direction where traffic travelling in opposite directions is separated only by a painted white line (or lines), is a single carriageway as there are only two kerbs, so does not have a 70mph NSL.0 -
Not sure why I would want another warning system on my car that only provides benefit to those that don't pay attention and have no ability to judge closing speed and distance.
Anybody that does require other drivers to have such a light i say let them have a large yellow warning beacon on the roof so the rest of us can take appropriate precautions.0 -
I think it's better to illustrate this than describe it.

This is a dual carriageway. The sign even says so. It has a speed limit of 70mph.
This is also a dual carriageway.
This is a single carriageway. Obviously it's a 30 limit due to streetlights and houses, however if those were not there and/or there were NSL signs in place it would be a 60 limit despite having two lanes in each direction.0 -
Rubbish. Just because a driver lifts their foot off the accelerator for 5 seconds doesn't mean it's a sign for the driver behind to overtake. The light would be coming on all the time without the driver even knowing, and the driver behind could only guess at what it meant, if anything. Confusion galore. If you want a light which says "Overtake me", then try a left indicator. Much more effective... either that or just drive normally in the first place.
5 secs was just a number plucked out of air to indicate there would be a delay of some sort, if you want, it can increase to 15 secs. It wouldn't matter if lots of cars started flashing on a long approaches to a junction for example. It would just become the norm.
But this feature would be most relevant on open roads where lifting the foot would not be done normally and thus let drivers behind know that they have lifted the foot for a long time and are continuing to do so, thus allowing them to decide to overtake much sooner than if there was no light.
A left indicator would cause all sorts of confusion there would be many drivers who decide to hold back because they expect you to stop, when you then accelerate they would be very confused and annoyed if you keep doing it. This light has a purpose which everyone would know and would thus facilitate people to overtake or save a bit of fuel themselves.
You guys just don't realise a good idea when you see it. I hope I lift the foot infront of all of you at one point, then you will realise "damn if we had that light I could have overtaken this guy 1/2 mile back when he was doing 55."0 -
That's what all bad inventors think :rotfl:You guys just don't realise a good idea when you see it.
I think it's a better idea if you just agree to have the light fitted to your car. Similar concept already exists; we've already got a red "idiot light" for oil pressure
Honestly this is one of the worst (serious) suggestions I have ever read.0 -
Why not have one of those ticker displays in the rear window that could read a multitude of phrases from the click of a button,
"I'm not accelerating so please over take me"
"I'm going to brake sharply in a moment BEWARE"
"I'm going to indicate left/right shortly"
"Try and overtake me and I will burn you!!"
"Why not get a little closer, you could park in my boot and save yourself some fuel"
"Can you guess what i'm going to do next?"
lolEveryones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
Believe it or not, you can actually get those for cars.0
-
Because it allows the car behind to know that you are intentionally rolling (and will be slowing down gradually) and they can then either roll themselves or prepare to overtake. Rather than them getting upset at your car going slower and slower and them not knowing why it's happening or not expecting it to carry on getting slower. If they see the light they KNOW it will get slower and slower whilst the light stays on.
I think it would benefit the driver behind.
Here's a clue: Try looking at what is going on ahead of just your bonnet and using your brain.0 -
