I would agree that if someone is unable or unwilling to drive at an appropriate speed, they shouldn't be given a licence. But why would it suddenly become acceptable to drive at an inappropriate speed once they have a licence?
I don't know what you mean by 'suddenly become acceptable'. When was it ever unacceptable to drive slower than the maximum safe and legal speed if you happen to want to?
Your driving licence permits you to drive up to the speed limit when it's safe to do so. If the ability to do that wasn't assessed on the driving test, you could end up giving a licence to someone who didn't have the skill or judgement to know when it was and wasn't safe to drive at the speed limit. And if that person ever did decide to drive up to the speed limit, as many people do, they would be dangerous. So of course that skill and judgement is a necessary part of qualifying for a driving licence.
Now hypothetically, what about someone who would like to drive places and feels that they would never want to exceed 50mph? There's no restricted category of driving licence that says "allowed to do everything everyone else is allowed, except never exceed 50 mph". The only licence available to them is the normal driving licence - and for the reasons above, the test for that licence has to require that you demonstrate you know when it is and isn't safe to drive up to the speed limit - because it's something you might choose to do one day and it's potentially dangerous.
Once you have a driving licence, driving at the maximum safe and legal speed is permitted, not mandatory.0 -
Just like when a person uses an indicator, we KNOW they are going to turn? Of course not... we should never rely on lights alone. Especially ones put on by a computer automatically without the driver even knowing. As soon as they assume it's safe to overtake the car could speed up.
Crazy idea... which would either cause confusion or people just wouldn't pay any attention to it!
Some cars flash their brakelights rapidly under heavy braking. I've seen that several times and that's a good idea. Make that standard!
Sometime ago Citroen (and a few other manufacturers), on some models, would have the hazard warning lights deploy, when under heavy deceleration. I don't know why they stopped doing that.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

They wouldn't.
But regardless of the rights and wrong of driving too close to the car in front, the fact remains that some very visible indicator of the car in front of you being forced to brake heavily would be capable of averting accidents.
It therefore is a good idea regardless of whether the bloke behind is being a numpty or not.0 -

When you took your driving test - it would've got you at the very least a minor fault.Once you have a driving licence, driving at the maximum safe and legal speed is permitted, not mandatory.
I'm not claiming that it's mandatory, but it is good practice. Driving at, as you mention, 50mph, when the speed limit is 70mph and road conditions don't preclude doing 70mph, is at best inconsiderate. There is no good reason, if conditions and your vehicle allow, why you should want to drive 30% below the speed limit! On your driving test, an examiner doesn't care whether you're doing 50mph in a 70mph limit because you want to or because you are incapable of controlling a car at higher speeds.Strider590 wrote: »No, it mean's be aware of your surroundings and drive accordingly
Let me re-phrase that from the other side, to clarify what I meant. Doing something that would cause you to fail your driving test, or accumulate minor faults, is bad driving. Intentionally driving slowly, without good reason, is even worse. Driving in accordance with your surroundings would include "driving at an appropriate speed", no?0 -
I would like to see cars have a central "straight ahead" indicator light. That way at roundabout and crossroads we can tell the difference between someone actually going straight ahead vs those muppets who don't bother to indicate.
It might look something like this:

There's "driving too slow" and there's really driving too slow though.
50 in a 70 is easy -- it's a dual carriageway (at least), so overtake. Problem solved.
40 in a 60 is harder to justify -- if it's safe to do so you should be making more of an effort. However, provided you do not try to impede faster drivers from overtaking (and that means remaining at 40mph when the road opens up a little rather than speeding up just long enough that they can't legally overtake, or even worse gunning it when an attempt is made) then I think you're in the clear.
30 in a 60 though -- forget it. You're just a menace and should ask yourself why you're driving badly.0
