Here's another novel idea - people who get annoyed at what the driver ahead is doing are psychologically unfit to drive and should be banned:D

I don't know why you all think it's me who is the driver behind. I have always on here said I drive on ditchfinders because I don't drive like an idiot, part of my manner in driving is fuel saving, so I regularly freewheel and inevitably slow down whilst doing so. I just wish I could indicate that intention to the driver behind so that they can overtake me. Rather than me feeling guilty for making them slow down or them getting frustrated.

This light would solve the problem, mostly.

If the car sped up they would immediately see the light switching off. Who said anything about relying on lights alone? This system would be unlikely to give false readings, but it would provide IMO a valuable bit of information to those like Strider who like to make progress.
But they wouldn't see the light switch off once they've started overtaking.
You said a driver could "KNOW" (your emphasis) what a vehicle was doing because of the light. I disagreed.

Have a peek at the Highway Code, Hand Signals section.
But if you're always going so slow in the name of fuel saving and you feel guilty about holding people up, your probably taking things too far and should just speed up a bit...

And you would be incorrect to think otherwise, obviously this light would indicate the driver infront has lifted the foot for a significant time and is continuing to do so, and as long as that is the case the car will be slowing down. Very unlikely to get any false readings, and the vast majority of the time the light would function correctly.

So what is your disagreement? Is it just a pedantic "well the light could be faulty so they cannot be 100% sure" ? That's a bit silly really isn't it? You could say that about brake lights, why have them when they are not 100% accurate?

You want me to wave my hand out the window all the time, again pretty stupid suggestion. This light would do it perfectly. I have no intention of changing my fuel saving routine, and this light WOULD help others know what I am doing.

Because it allows the car behind to know that you are intentionally rolling (and will be slowing down gradually) and they can then either roll themselves or prepare to overtake. Rather than them getting upset at your car going slower and slower and them not knowing why it's happening or not expecting it to carry on getting slower. If they see the light they KNOW it will get slower and slower whilst the light stays on.

I think it would benefit the driver behind.

I think if the driver behind doesn't notice the driver in front slowing down a slap with a comedy item such as a rubber chicken or wet haddock would benefit them more. If they are slowing to stop or turn they should be indicating anyway and if they forget they get the comedy slap instead.

In the meantime, have you thought about positioning left and popping the left indicator on if you want to encourage someone behind to consider overtaking?

Just out of interest, OP, where do you drive? I want to avoid those roads if at all possible.

As your freewheeling/fuel saving routine is clearly annoying other drivers maybe you should stop doing it. It is unlikely to be saving much, if any, fuel.
