This board is full of life saving tips. Thanks to James_N I may live longer.

He warns us all that drinking more water is "dangerous nonsense". I for one was not aware of the dangers of drinking water and am going to review my behaviour with immediate effect.

I am going to drink coke, coffee and eat a healthy of portion bacon (contains FLUID!) before I exercise. I have often wondered how the average member of the USA public attains that healthy, slender look and James_N has just informed me!

"Eat pork and cheese before you run kids - they contain FLUIDS!"

"It is American to drink water" is the message I get from some other posters. Funny that... I'm just baffled at how the human race has survived for so long without the Americans around to tell us that we need to have a healthy intake of water.

It looks like the hydration info on the site was sourced from a senior policy executive at the British Medical Association. Why would they want to poison the population with water? Who knows who to trust these days?

    Dear Octopus

Whilst going along with trendy water-consumption recommendations may only have the effect of making you spend money on unnecessary and expensively packaged bottled waters (by-the-way, one of the MOST unnecessary food-miles ever devised) and of making you look a prat while u clutch your drinkies bottle as you move around (but I guess you don't mind that).
"Experts" are undecided if the extra load on the kidneys from increased consumption is dangerous: it may be. If you look for other attitudes to this you WILL see other ideas. The Chinese believe that water consumption should only take place when the body is thirsty - not regular whether you need it or not. A friend of mine who grew up in Switzerland NEVER drank with a meal, saying she was taught that this diluted digestive jiuces and was a bad thing to do. So you can see that this "water reminder advice"
    *IS* JUST ONE CURRENTLY-TRENDY ATTITUDE.

However, excessive water consumption can definitely have some unlooked for side effects.
If you exercise, excessive water consumption can be MEDICALLY dangerous. Precisely what is dangerous depends on you, your exercise and the conditions - see

    - this by the way illustrates exactly what the problem is - the unthinking adoption of "expert" recommendations.
If you cut out other fluids - like milk, tea, coffee you may miss out in other ways "such as high flavonoid and antioxidant content of fruit juices, tea, coffee, beer, and hot chocolate, or the protein and calcium in milk. Thus, the problem with the advice to drink copious amounts of water and avoid other beverages might be secondary and unanticipated effects of the advice."

I think if binge-drinkers manage not to drown themselves from the inside out on a Saturday night drinking pint after pint inside a couple of hours then I'll be alright with 2 litres a day.

Do you think you might take some notice when you DIE from too much water intake?

I am at a loss to see how drinking more water is dangerous. It is good that WaterAid are encouraging people to be healthy.

I think if I drank too much water my body would let me know.

I've never heard of anyone calling up their boss to say "I can't come in to work today, I've been virtually poisoned by drinking too much water".

I have never heard of bread companies marketing their bread as thirst quenchers either - HOVIS! - CONTAINS 35% WATER!

I would not worry about the scare moungers who say drinking water is dangerous.

If you're anything like me you're always forgetting to drink water, I'm terrible for it. This is a very good idea from Water Aid. There's lots of information about water and dehydration. There's even a calculator for how much you need to drink. Here's the link to a pop-up reminder that will remind you to get a glass of water throughout the day.
