I never used to drink a lot of water during the day, and then kidney stones hit me like a thunderbolt.

I've never been in as much pain !!

Now I drink plenty of water (doctors advice)

same happened to me. I'm no good at doing it consistently tho. I drink green tea to get xtra water without overloading on caffeine.

    You must drink more water

The advice fully meets three important criteria for being an American health urban legend: excess, public virtue, and the search for a cheap "magic bullet."

If you're anything like me you're always forgetting to drink water, I'm terrible for it. This is a very good idea from Water Aid. There's lots of information about water and dehydration. There's even a calculator for how much you need to drink. Here's the link to a pop-up reminder that will remind you to get a glass of water throughout the day.

    WARNING
    THIS IDEA IS DANGEROUS NONSENSE.
It's the amount of FLUID you take in that's critical. Taking a normal amount of fluid - in bread, veg, meats, rice and drinks - yes, even cola and THEN taking the normal amount again as water is not just misguidedly daft, it's potentially dangerous. All these idiots going around clutching their water bottles like babies - how do they think previous generations survived without little plastic drinkies?

I agree the site seems to over-estimate a little on the number of glasses you may want to drink but that site you quote is just a Canadian news site, and the article from 2003?

I know from experience that when I remember to drink more water I feel better for it.

Sorry - what ever you feel the reality of the situation is diffent to the idiotic drinking regime some misguidedly push. Here's another official put-down of the old myth about drinking water.

Water Needs: How Much Water Do You Really need to Drink?

    Official Guidelines on Water Intake

According to the Institute of Medicine's Food and Nutrition Board in their recent sixth report (February 2004) concerning water intake and electrolyte nutrients:

    1. The vast majority of healthy people adequately meet their daily hydration and fluid intake needs by letting thirst be their guide. As a general guide, the Food and Nutrition Board set general recommendations for women at approximately 2.7 liters (about 8 glasses) of total water - from all beverages and foods - each day, and men an average of approximately 3.7 liters (about 12 glasses) of total water.

Note: American women already average 9 cups of water a day from all beverages combined, and American men, 13 cups.

    2. About 80 percent of people's total water intake comes from drinking water and beverages - including caffeinated beverages - and the other 20 percent is derived from food.

    3. Prolonged physical activity and/or heat exposure increases water loss and thus increases daily fluid needs.

    4. The Institute of Medicine's Food and Nutrition Board also stated that it is a myth that coffee and (moderate consumption of) alcoholic beverages are dehydrating. Caffeinated beverages contribute to daily total water intake, in the same way as non-caffeinated beverages.

Well I was really chuffed to get something I'd posted mentioned on the Tips email but maybe it should be removed. I'm shocked quite honestly by the outcry against increasing water intake. I see that it's still American sites being quoted, and this last one an American weightloss site advertising diet aids aswell as selling help and support.

I will be contacting WaterAid with this thread and hopefully someone may have time to get back to me so that I can pass on their thoughts or advice.

My intention on sharing this link was only to aid those who like myself, would like a little help remembering to drink water at intervals throughout the day. I am glad if it's helped a few. As has been mentioned it is possible to drink too much water so keep that in mind.

3 years medical training taught me that; just 5% dehydration-virtually unoticable- leads to c 20% loss of 'performance/function 'etc. get tired/irritable easy? concentration could/shoulkd be lot better? etc etc = YOU'RE DEHYDRATED !!
diet coke a proper fluid ??!! google - aspartame dangers [etc] and then be smug ! [the sweetner in diet drinks]
    good luck

  • actually reading james_n above urges me to stongly point out the massive influencial power, partic' in good ol' usa', of both the collosal soft drinks and coffee selling industries.both under huge pressures financially for different reasons-'pop crap' for health and obesity of course, and coffee for poor recent harvests and .fair trade. market increases. if u read mens fitness mags they have got in for over two years thro' back door by advocating
coffee consumption b4 exercise;not a good idea at all.please be aware that an appalling amount of 'unbiased learned etc medical reports/studies are paid for whitewashes by companies;particulary in dubya's lovely country but not exclusively !
man evolved from the ocean,is thus aquatic by nature..etc etc. common sense should dictate the rest !! [that water oceans,NOT DIET COKE !!]

  • I am as guilty as most for not drinking enough water...what I have been doing is drinking water with Robinsons sugar free fruit and barley but via this thread I have become aware of "aspartame" and it's dangers which are quite frightening when you read the published medical reports available on the net
Has anyone any ideas of soft drinks that do not have aspartame in them? I drink sugar free as I do not need the extra calories 6 glasses of full sugar drinks would bring. Any ideas welcome thanks

above is the problem isnt it. society is so used to strong chemically created 'flavours' in their drinks good ol' plain water just tastes soo boring ! understandable. look at the rise and rise of 'flavoured' water now = aaah !! missing the point or what ?! full of chemicals and sweetners especially the brain rotting aspartame.
my tip ? i buy quality pure cordial type concentrates such as for instance those from' belvoir cordials' . these and other pure products i then dilute heavily to take the taste of our pretty grim tap water away and at same time provide useful vitamin c etc.the difference is instantly noticable, well to me anyway ! to those who want to dive in with ''cost-we're money savers etc etc' i'll simply say; its not all about money, health is wealth- ask yourself-what are you worth ?
    happy new year,god bless all.
