Any good for a daughter who is 10 and wants one of these for her birthday?

Would/could only consider at the refurbished prices, and feel best to just go for 3G.

BUT, while I have stressed that she still needs to buy books (after getting the free ones!), I'm not convinced on whether it is a good thing for kids. We do travel abroad and camp so keeps luggage minimal.

Guess I'm asking if anyone has tried to download kids books and if there are enough at reasonable prices available. Also while I say to get a 3G one, would that really be needed for my daughter? What advantage for a child would it be.....just email?

I really want to buy on for me too but financially not poss. at the moment but if is going to be the thing to get for her, want to get this offer before it runs out.

Any experiences re kids and Kindle appreciated.

If it encourages her to read then I would definitely say yes. I love real books but having the 3g Kindle has made me read loads more. Some books can be more expensive. I'd look on Amazon and read reports on there under the Kindle page reviews. You could ask the question on there too.

Just wish I had seen the cover for £16.95!

Thanks Lara, will have another look on Amazon....SO much info to absorb though. Round to thinking I'm going to get one too, and obviously wish I'd made up my mind in time to get the cases! An earlier post said they can come back into stock so will keep a look out.
If only I could stop finding good bargains on this site, I would save a fortune! :rotfl:

I've just bought a refurbished one for my husband as an anniversary present. He is unsure if he would use one as he is a book person but I thought at that price it was worth it. I have the leather case with light as both my kindle and case were birthday presents from husband and sons and it's excellent. Hence I would have loved one of the £16.95 ones for husband but as you say they supposedly come in and out stock so shall keep my eyes peeled - when I remember! :D

Perhaps you and your daughter could share one?
  • Google DuoKan for a whole new OS that reads .PDFs without conversion.
Also Calibre is good for managing collections on USB sticks - nice video tutorials by the author (sic), too

Nothing to do with these bits of software, just had so much fun installing a second OS on a Kindle and solved a .PDF problem in one go

    Enjoy! (all free BTW)
  • Took the plunge & ordered 3 x 3G Kindles - one for dd2 (for birthday) and one for both me and my dd1 (both for Xmas). Will check them out thoroughly though before putting away as aware warranty will be ticking but not wanting to miss out.

Now to grab a case bargain but plenty of time to do that.

You won't be disappointed. Mine came all wrapped so I've left it like that. Not needed for another week or so. As other's have said they appear to be brand new. I have checked it over, through the wrapping!, and there isn't a mark on it. You will have two delighted daughters at Christmas time I am sure! :T

We bought my 9 year old the non-3G version last Christmas and she loves it. The battery life is amazing and she has never read so may books! There are quite a few free books which you can find with Google and through the Amazon site. The Kindle was also a 'hit' with her 11 year old sister who asked for one as a birthday present.

I agree and will be well pleased. Original I-pod nanos for all family were refurbished from Apple and were as new. A problem with one was dealt with extremely well & replaced immediately so have faith in refurbished products and CS of Amazon from what others said.

One daughter getting hers beginning of Oct for Birthday - gonna be hard for myself and other daughter:)
