How bad has this country got that a basic like corned beef which us old soldiers used to thrive on, moan about, and even discard tins of we had so much of it has now become a luxury item? What's next - hard tack at £5 a packet?0

I bought a tin of the Basics Corned beef (£1.49) yesterday and you're Dad is right - there was hardly any fat and it was really nice. I will definitely be buying again! I looked at the label and compared it with other brands on the shelf and the percentage of meat was identical, and all the other ingredients were identical too.Jane

I think the fat is an essential component. In the army we used to fry it in its own fat on our little no1 petrol stove.
*Homer Simpson voice* Hmmmm - corned beef and petrol *slavers*0 -

It was a ship's biscuit from ye olden days and it was as hard as the oak timbers. In the army until around Y2K there was quite a hard dry biscuit in the ration packs which was referred to as hard tack.
Thanks GlynD, you learn something new everyday!
I can't remember where I put my keys or what I went upstairs for but shall try and remember that little nugget.0 -

...and before you ate it you had to tap it very hard on a wooden or metal surface to get as many as possible of the weevils to fall out
OR....you soaked the biscuit in water/gruel/beer etc, etc, this made the biscuits much easier to eat and the weevils would swim out !
That is why people still dunk their bikkies today :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
