I think this new product range will be used as an excuse to encourage customers to upgrade their account.

Absolutely it will be. The Silver Account isn't necessarily being heavily pushed by the bank though the benefits will likely sell themselves.

Fewer people are likely to want the 'Basic' account also given the limited ATM use.

I agree, except that they shouldn't impose it without the user asking for it, especially if the transfer goes to the a £8/month account!

A similar thing happened to me many years ago.

After an investigation by my branch management, it was found that my RBS branch were training new staff and by accident one of the trainees was given access to the live system rather than the training system.:eek:
During a training session they changed my standard current account to a Royalties Gold, 1st I knew of it was when the paperwork arrived with the T&Cs for the Royalties Gold account.

I phoned the branch and the manager investigated and then reverted my account to the original type, plus I recieved a small payment as a token of their appology.

Call centre staff would not be able to revert your account to the Key Account but the branch should be capable of doing it.

The matter could be easily resolved.

Alls you need to do is walk into a branch and ask them to downgrade your account to a select account or if you feel so strongly about ask them to convert it back to a key account.

Do you not think there is a chance it may have been a keying error? these things do happen!

However bare in mind key accounts MAY get converted into a basic account at some point in the future however this is under strong debate at the moment. So ideally you would be better off asking for the account to be converted to a select account.

Migration from the old Ad Private account to the new Black account is starting in August...

I guess they'll take things from there.

    TO TWISTER84 & STCLAIR:

Shouldn't I receive a new card at least? Mine starts with 4751 16xx which I got when I opened my Key Account. But as I understand it, Select accounts have another type of card, so I think they should change the card right? They said on the phone all the cards are the same ar RBS!!!!

Also, if I should receive a new card, what should be the first 6 digits of it please?

thank you so much for your much appreciated help!

Just because you have a select or select silver account it does not mean your guaranteed to get an offline debit card.

The upgrade without your consent is illegal. They can however move you to an account that will provide you better or equal services at no disadvantage to the customer without your consent. Perhaps they meant to put you on the free one and just made a mistake.

The silver account has insurance involved, and there is things that the customer must agree to (CRA check , fraud check, consent to share information with 3rd parties) before it can be done.

I just willingly upgraded mine, and the man on the phone was reading for 20 mins and I had to agree verbally before he could put it through.

You would only receive a new card if you were put on the basic account.

well, it seems they didn't need to spend time with me! I called again today and they ordered an offline card and I'll go to the branch this week to have it transfered again to a Select Account so that at least I don't have to pay for monthly fees.

I think its odd how it was such a big issue you being upgraded.

However there was no hesitation in changing your signature to reflect the change :D
