Glasgow John Lewis is selling at £817 today - what they call an undersale i.e. pricematch - although I'm not sure which store they're pricematching against.

    Hi Williamh1...

Can you just walk in and ask for it at that price?

Do I have to aks to price match with someone?

I live in Glasgow and going into town tomorrow - I have so far managed to talk myself out of this because it is silver (it does look a little dated next to other models and I have a wife!) but at this price with a 5 year warranty is hard to beat.

Dazco I did the Price match with Empire Direct. Just working out the best way to connect Sky, Dvd cinema sound etc, will let you know how I get on.
Ah! Thanks for letting me know that.

I am giving up on the idea of getting one at £769.01 ( digidirect price off JL).

Will ring cheadle and get them to price match Empire direct.

Au contraire - they could easily argue that that sort of material is not what the TV was designed to display, so it's not a fault if it doesn't display it faithfully. Sort of like complaining about a dud pixel which you can only see when your eye is pressed up to the screen.

Had to have a chuckle at that quote! The TV was not designed to play some DVD's and freeview broadcasts without introducing completely different and unnatural colours to those in the original film/programme. When you pause such a scene the purple artifacts keep moving whilst the rest of the picture is static. You don't work for Panasonic Customer Services do you by any chance? :-)

It will be a brilliant set when Panasonic fix this issue.

No I have no connection with Panasonic; I am simply aware of some of the compromises that go into the production of equipment like this. Showing the snakes on a test DVD is a good way of demonstrating them but does not prove that they are visible on normal picture material, which is what the set was designed to display.

If you check the thread on AVForums (which admittedly is very long) you will find that the purple snakes appear on all forms of material including normal broadcasts. Even so I think you will also find that a court will find that a plasma is in fact expected to show material from DVD's as well as terrestrial broadcasts. In what way is a DVD material not considered normal anyway? I sit 11ft from the screen and as mentioned above and can clearly see the snakes on Freeview broadcasts (Gone in 60 Seconds was full of them, Big Brother, Torchwood..the list goes on).

Comparing them to a dead pixel (which is specifically mentioned in the manufacturers spec for tolerances) is somewhat like comparing the size of an apple with an elephant.

If you can't see the purple in the following clip or you can live with the purple issue displayed on it then you have nothing to worry about - the set will be perfect for you. I am not sure if you have to sign up to AVForums to be able to access the clip ...

I have, and I know that - you are missing my point.

My point is that these artifacts must be visible on material the TV is intended to show, in order that it can be classed as a fault, and just because they appear on a test pattern does not prove that they will.

I am not denying that they do exist on this material; merely that trying to get the set replaced just because it looks nasty with this test DVD (nothing to do with DVD per se!) is not a very good way to proceed.

I hope that is clear now.
you can't see the purple in the following clip
That is not a clip - that is a still image. The difference may seem to be pedantic but it is far from so - the eye is very much less able to notice defects in a moving image than in a still image. Someone needs to post a video clip of the screen. Even if the scene is not moving, the snakes could well be momentary and not noticeable in practice, as opposed to being captured in perpetuity by a camera. On the other hand, they might be just as bad as implied by the still image. Fair enough.

Once again, I am not saying that the faults don't exist; just pointing out flaws in the reasoning surrounding them.

If these snakes were not visible in normal playback and only in frozen pictures then it wouldn't be too easy to spot them in the first place. Watching Gone in 10 Seconds on Freeview I saw at least 10 lots of the blighters without trying from 11ft away.

Anyway - I will stick to AV Forums.... someone may provide an MPG file for you to see but we are more concerned with getting a resolution sorted out for people who actually have the set and feel the artifacts are not within acceptable limits. Some people will not be so fussy or even notice... but £1000 on a TV is a lot of money for me to accept the set as it is.
