he's already paid, money came out via DD. He's moaning because he thinks Vodafone should have notified him.

Well notifaction comes when you take out the phone for example like my own which comes out by DD like the poster on the 24th of everymonth You are told when you receive your free texts to your account and minuites(if any) and following that two weeks later the bill is produced or DD asked by company to bank

so i dont think he is moaning just upset with the costs

Son had contract at aged 11, phone not stolen. now has PAYG blackberry and is 13. We trust him and until he breaks that trust we will continue to trust him - and his taste in friends.

I have no problem with you exercising your parental rights in giving your son a contract and he is behaving responsibly. Absolutely your right and choice.

From your posts, you differ from OP in accepting that if the monthly bill came in high through overuse or loss, you would accept your responsibility to settle it and not try to blame the network.

For those parents who might find it more difficult to cope with a large bill, PAYG is the sensible route to go when providing a child with a mobile.

What a load of unsympathetic people you are!

I have actually managed to get a refund of half the money from Vodaphone today so it was definately worth challenging.

We are all up against the greed and exploitation of big companies and should fight them when we can.

Vodafone refunded you out of goodwill, not obligation. You used their services, and expect them to provide it for free when you discover you are unable to pay. Unbelievable...

I must tell the petrol station that their fuel is a rip off, will they give me half back for how much I have used?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
