Feeling safe in Cardiff, is one thing, ... a lot of us feel safe in Cardiff, safe from muggings and violence, HOWEVER, that does not mean there is no risk, sensible precautions should always be taken.

If you're "out on the town" at night don't answer back to anyone or group who are looking for a fight, keep your temper when coming into contact with others, little things can easily escalate into horrific violence.... it does happen even in Cardiff.

Preferably don't be out alone, however if you are alone, you can keep to well lit areas (strreetlights) and cross the road to avoid confrontation with other groups.

There was a recent mugging of 2 girl students late (11pm?) at night on Flora Street, a probable drug addict held a knife to one of the girls, and asked for her handbag?, she willingly gave it to him out of panic and he ran off. The good news is that this sort of thing is rare in Cardiff, but it does happen, and girls as a result of this should IMO be in groups of 3 or more, and boys in 2 or more.

And a taxi home is always a good idea.

Nice advice, except when you compare it to other advice and information it doesn't always fit.

To not be alone you have to know people. If you don't know people the advice is to go out and make new friends. This would imply that you are on your own and out.

Even if you are out with people, people don't live together. At some point you have to split up, or one is the last one home, so alone.

Taxis are expensive, especially when paying for one on your own. Add this to the information that women are paid less than men.

So really, if you don't know anybody, you're already living alone (which is expensive), you shouldn't go out/be on your own and you need to get an expensive taxi home (that you can't afford).

So maybe the advice should be: don't go out, stay in. It's safer that way :)

Taxis are not expensive, people go out and spend upto £100 on alcohol and then complain about a £5 cab fare. Obviously cab fares vary depending on distance, but we are here talking about people who walk into town and back, greatly implying that they live in the Roath/Cathays area (or similar distance from town).

If you go out with people who live near you, you either share a cab home which greatly reduces the cost, or you phone for a cab from your friends house which you walked to.

If you have no friends, I would suggest the last place you will find new friends is out on the town. You should find new friends in the daytime, whilst doing things that you enjoy. And if you really want boozer friends to be your new found friends, then the local boozer would be preferable to walking all the way into the centre of town.
  • Holy hand-grenades, Batman! It's thread resurrection time!

The missus and I are heading off to Cardiff tonight for the weekend (from London).

What's the parking situation now? The council's website is a bit cryptic (not knowing the area) and the NCP web site is dreadful (and scary! how much do they think they can get away with charging?!)

The city centre looks small enough to walk around everywhere, so ideally I'd like to park tonight at about 2200, and pick the car up on Sunday at 1800-2000. Is there anywhere with a reasonable day rate (or on-street free parking at weekends)?

    Heelp!

I agree - the sites are a bit vague.

I need to park near the bus station from around 6am to 11pm on Monday.

Anybody know how much it'll cost me in the Wood st NCP?

I could walk from somewhere free if not too far - and I arrive early enough.... any suggestions?

There are also one or two free parking spaces to be found on the roads around Tudor St & Ninian Park Road, on Ninian park road itself there are a few unmarked free spaces on the left hand side of the road as you drive away from the junction with Tudor Road. You could get lucky.

    Dunno about NCP rates.

    Absolutely perfect.

Thanks so much for this - I parked just down from Gloucester Street. Left it there at about 6:10....... picked it up all scratch free, ticket and clampless at about 22:00.

    HUGE THANKX
  • I have had my car broken into twice parking in the large outdoor NCP next to toys R us in Cardiff. It's free to park there in the night time. The first time I caught the little beggers in the act, chased them off. Silly me for thinking that parking under a streetlight was the way to go! They were pelting the car from a distance before entering quickly and grabbing what they could. I would never park there again.
  • When I've had to park my car overnight/late at night in the city centre, I park outside the police station in Cathays Park. It is free to park after 6 and £3.00 to park in the daytime (either for 5 hours or 10 hours depending on the space you pick.)

When I'm not in a rush, I park for free in Cathays (about 15 minute walk into the centre) or Richmond Road (10 minute walk).

I was in Cardiff on Sunday, couldn't believe that they now charge to park in Cathays park/Park Place (Museum Ave) on Sat & Sunday 10 am - 5 pm (?) (£1.50 for 2 hours) Weekdays charges until 6pm after that it is free.

    Unbelievable.

One side of Park Place used to be for 2 hours, and the other side was like Cathays Park for all day on a single voucher, and of course free on Sundays now it's all the same £1.50 for 2 hours.
