    Thanks

After 6.30pm you will be able to park in any of the streets near the venue as the parking restrictions only apply in the day, this also applies to parking near the civic centre which are over the road from the venue

I've come back to this thread for my own advice, I gave the loading bay hours on Charles Street, and I'm hoping to park there.

    'Good neighbourhood'

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

One of the roughest and dodgiest areas in Cardiff, renowned for drug dealing and being a red light district!!! Good one!!!!!

Rubbish, there aren't really any areas which are overly rough, and Black Saturn is way out of line, Cardiff is very safe and a great place to visit. That said, women and preferably men too should not walk alone at night, Cardiff is a city at the end of the day and all cities have night crawling scum. Women should walk in groups of 3 or more.

If I had said park on Channel view road, or South Clive Street, or South Bute Street I'd understand, but Taff Embankment/Taff Mead Embankment... nothing wrong with that place. Oh and Red light district? Taff mead embankment? I must be blind because I've never seen "them" there either. Red light area is Tyndall Street.

    Parking at County Hall:
I never had any trouble parking there during the day (for free) except finding a space. Maybe in the last year or 2 it has changed t&c's I dunno. Walking from there to St Mary St would be about 15 minutes unless there's something wrong with you. It is roughly 1 mile (which is what OP asked for) and most humans can walk at the average of 4 mph which equals 1mile in 15 minutes.
  • PARK ON CATHEDRAL RD avoiding the bus stops, permit parking and yellow lines, its free and not far to walk. Unfortunately driving and parking in cardiff city centre has become a nightmare as some clever person closed off St Mary Street! You'll be ok with an a to z.

at the mo parking in the car park attached to the capital shopping center (access via churchill way) is £2 after either 6 or 6.30pm (cant remember which off the top of my head, old age is a terrible thing :D). you have to be out by midnight, but for a bit of late night shopping or an event at the cia/new theatre, it is ideal, and uncomparable really price wise (well, unless you can find city centre parking for free :P)

granted, it is possibly the worst laid out car park ever in existence  :D but in my experience it is safe, secure and a prime location from which to hit the town.

I think Cardiff has it's share of crime and anti social behaviour. On the whole it is a well developed, not too large city with lots to see and do. I have lived here for around 10 years now and surprised myself with the tourist attractions when a friend came to visit.

A downside with being an expanding city is NCP have had a car park wiped out due to the St Davids 2 shopping mall construction which has reduced the number of spaces in the city centre considerably. As a result they have hiked up the prices with a new 15minute charging policy. NCP car parks are famed for their lack of security and 'passing the buck' on crime incidents in them. They only have CCTV pointing at their equipment - such as pay machines and ticket barriers and they have a policy of not moving homeless on now as it was viewed that they would commit crime to get back at being evicted.

I always use the Knox Street car park which is opposite the prison just round the corner from the Legal & General building. It has been awarded a 'safe car park' accreditation for many years now and seems to be a little more reasonable when it comes to charging.

I always park in Roath for free, and walk into town. Except in the evening, when I will park in Charles Street (loading bay after 5pm) or Churchill way (after 6PM) for free.
  • Here's a link to Cardiff Council's new pay & display areas and charges (voucher parking ceased to exist on October 1st)

    http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/content.asp?Parent_Directory_id=2865&nav=2870,4048,4194,4258

Not much use for those looking for long-stay parking, but thought it might be useful anyway. Pay & Display is proving far more useful than voucher parking, and there are generally more spaces available for shoppers as less commuters use the spaces.

And to add my tuppence to the debate: Grangetown/Riverside (Taff's Mead Embankment, Taff Embankment) isn't bad at all. Nothing wrong with leaving your car overnight at those places - I've done it myself and experienced no problems whatsoever. The 'rough' areas are disappearing fast, but generally speaking, the worst areas are Butetown and Ely - I wouldn't recommend strolling around there after dark...

The main with problem with Cardiff City Centre is drunken 'youths' on St Mary Street at the weekend, which is pretty much the same problem that other town centres experience. Not that I'm advocating it, but I've walked around town late at night many many times by myself, and I've never witnessed, or experienced any untoward behaviour (excepting the odd 'alrite luv?' and other such comments of course). Closing off St Marys Street to cars (only buses & taxis are allowed) has vastly improved the centre for visitors too, as there's far less traffic to negotiate between the bus/train station & the main shopping area.

It's worth remembering that people are more likely to report bad experiences than good ones - I'm assuming that black-saturn has had a bad experience in Cardiff and has allowed it to cloud their judgement. For every negative review of Cardiff, there are probably several hundred, if not thousand, positive reviews.

I walked alone in the dark from Churchills, down Cathedral Road, over the bridge, right through the centre of town and out the other side up Newport Road on a number of occasions after 10pm.

I am small and a scaredy cat. Didn't have any trouble. Only thing I DID notice though was: I did appear to be [a] the ONLY person alone the only female at all.

Two drunk chaps did stop me up Newport Road on one occasion. One stopped and asked me very politely if I would go back to his place. I smiled and said "No thank you" and he said "Oh well, it was worth asking" and continued on his way.

I am from the country and stupidly naive. However, I am sure if I'd continued to be so reckless, or if I'd been drunk/unaware of my surroundings, I'd quickly find a different side of life.

    Hello,
Funnily enough I returned yesterday from Cardiff where my family and I had a bargain break at the Cardiff Central Travelodge, and am sore enough to tell you all about my woes!It was a really cheap break and we did all we could to keep costs down. There is no car park associated with the hotel as it is based in a great central location. We parked in the Wood Street NCP right behind the hotel at a cost of £10 ish for 24 hours, only to discover on checking out that some b****** had broken into our car, smashing the window and stealing the stereo and CDs! My husband, I ,two children and luggage had to wait for seven hours for someone to fix the window before we drove home to Bournemouth!
On Millennium Eve, my son drove with my daughter from London to Cardiff for the Millennium concert. He parked in the locked car park of the hotel they stayed at but returned to find that someone (probably from the secure house for teenage criminals adjacent to the property) had got into the car park, smashed his car window and made off with his base box (custom made speaker) and his favourite trainers had been pinched. Yes from a locked car park.
Fast forward to last New Years Eve, one year ago tomorrow. My daughter's partner was just moving into a flat in Roath. His car was stolen on that night, together with CD's bought for his birthday and other items he was moving, which were still in the boot. The car was found last New Years Day, burnt out in Newtown Road.

We discovered that theft from cars and arson of cars is a popular pastime in Cardiff. The statistic was 2000 arson attacks in the year before their car got stolen. We lived in a rough part of London for years but never experienced anything like it.
One tip we were given is to empty the glove compartment and leave it open - nothing to break in for. Dont leave anything in the car, not even a plastic bag which might be full of goodies.

None of our family will be celebrating this, or any other new year in Cardiff.
