Sorry to hear about your bad luck Charis. In the 10 years I've lived in Cardiff, I've not experienced any crime (hopefully I'm not tempting fate there!), and neither has my OH, who's spent 20 years on and off living here. I've lived in a variety of places too - Canton, Heath, Cathays, Roath, Town Centre - and I've owned a car for the entire time.
My point is, again, these things do happen unfortunately, but they happen to the minority. Cardiff is a great place to live, work, and socialise, honestly!

I've lived in the Cardiff area for almost 34 years and to be honest I feel much safer there at night than many other cities around the UK. You will always get muggings, drugs, breaking in Cars etc wherever you go and yes its all about "luck and back luck". Just make sure you don't leave stuff in your car which is obvious to nick and you should be fine.
I tend to part near the prison myself also I forget the name the out door one which is next to the multi story car park. That one is 1 pound per hour up to 5 hours when its when £5 for 24 hours but its a bit of a walk to the city centre so if your lazy don't go there :rotfl:
In addition Cardiff is one of the best places for shopping ...well if you like to shop until you drop.0 -
I've lived in Cardiff for the best part of forty years. During the twenty or so years that I've owned a car, it's been broken into once. That was when I left it in Cowbridge overnight. Based on that evidence one might say that you're far more likely to be a victim of car crime if you live in The Vale.0

We discovered that theft from cars and arson of cars is a popular pastime in Cardiff. The statistic was 2000 arson attacks in the year before their car got stolen. We lived in a rough part of London for years but never experienced anything like it.
One tip we were given is to empty the glove compartment and leave it open - nothing to break in for. Dont leave anything in the car, not even a plastic bag which might be full of goodies
I wondered about the statistics you gave so checked out nationwide crime statistics, Wales was below average in 2005, Cardiff was about 10% above the average Wales figure but a little less than London regions, London City was way above Cardiff and London regions. This is ALL crime statistics so includes murder, muggings etc. not just car arson crimes for the regions for 2005 - 2006 this link shows Wales but anyone can access nationwide from left menu.

Could you let me know where you found the statistics you quoted?0 -
I'm really sorry you've had such bad experiences of Cardiff, I've lived here for over 30 years and feel very safe.
Could you let me know where you found the statistics you quoted?

"Cardiff is quite a safe city, and certainly safer than some other major cities in the UK. However Cardiff has some of the highest car theft crime rates in the United Kingdom. Make sure you remove all valuables from your vehicle, especially from show. Do not park outside the city centre or cardiff bay, unless you know the area." (from http://wikitravel.org/en/Cardiff )0 -

Apologies about the links with exclamation marks, they are the result of trying to shorten ridiculously long addresses with !!!!!!!. For some reason this site doesn't like the word t i n y u r l and reproduces it with !!!!!
It was not me but my son and daughter who had their cars broken into and in the latter case burnt out. The police were not at all surprised. They said it was a regular occurrence. The only surprise was the letter from the police a few days later demanding over £100 for a towing away fee. It probably happens in most big cities. Including Cardiff.0 -
I posted this in another thread in response to a poster who kept portraying Cardiff as a crime-ridded hell-hole:http://images.thetimes.co.uk/TGD/pic...,301979,00.jpg
The only towns and cities with a lower mugging rate in England and Wales are Rotherham, Swansea, Plymouth, Exeter, York, Norwich, Eastboune, Poole and Ipswich. You have a 1 in 1000 chance of being mugged there. You are 5 times more likely to be mugged in London and 8 times more likely in Manchester
The only towns and cities with a lower chance of being assaulted are York, Cambridge, Reading, Colchester and Southend
It has the sixth worst rate for car crime of the 55 towns and cities surveyed.
It isn't good for car crime but overall is much safer than most towns and cities in England and Wales0 -
I would say watch out for the weevils:D Seriously though I have never felt unsafe walking around Cardiff. It's the best city in the world if you ask me:TTesco: £1361.19, Vanquis: £2644.73, Very: £563.08, Next: £1636.95, M&S: £1049.92. As of 5th February 2024. Slava Ukraini0
