    hi

    thanks for the reply.
This is the first cat we have ever had ( doggy lovers). so i assumed that the cat still needed a litter tray. He does ask to go out and never messes the house.

Do most people with an outdoor cat not have a litter tray?

    thanks

I would reccomend an enclosed one as we have one for our kitten and she can do as she likes and makes no mess. shes still not got the co-ordination to bury it well. Tends to flick it everywhere!!

I would have a litter tray as it may encourage him to go inside a bit, I would want to encourage my cat to go outside as the chances are it will be in everyone elses garden! But I only have a house cat, so cant comment on how outdoor cats work. :)

Have moved the litter tray to the front door and he's using that. It's pretty horrid having the litter tray indoors, especially as he used the cat flaps in the previous houses we were in. I know he doesn't realise that he's doing anything wrong (hence the throwing outside!!!) but it's just so frustrating when you clean it all up and the next day he's wee'd on the coconut mat again!!!

going on the kitchen work surfaces? I know that for all the times we take them off, they go on there when we aren't around, but I would like to put them off as much as possible.

    Any advice/tips?

I've not managed to stop mine either, she knows she not allowed but will sit there til I get within a foot of her then jump down!
I have heard you should keep a spray bottle filled with water handy and every time they jump up spray them with it but I'm too much of a softie to do that our cat :D

I employed the water spray technique with my two, works a treat and even the sight of the water bottle makes them behave now!

A waterpistol (small one, not a supersoaker type!!!!!!!!!!!!) tend to work for most things with cats, but for some reason when we've tried to stop them going on the worktop it has no effect

I can't stop my cats from going on the work surfaces in the kitchen. As kittens i did give them a spray with water but now 5 years on it hasn't made any difference.

No, my cats jump up on the worktops although they don't do it all the time. Although, one of my cats actually sleeps on top of the kitchen wall cupboards!! She jumps on the worktops, then jumps up to the fridge and then up on to the wall cupboards! Heaven knows why she likes sleeping up there! There are about 11ft from the ground!

I have images of a cat being blasted off a work top now by a super soaker. Hehehe.

First bit of advice is make sure everyone in the house follows the same rules. If they spot the cat they take her off and tell her off. My mum is soft and lets our kitten get away with everything so she never learns! Ruddy mothers... (anyway....)

Keep going and never give up with taking her off, and the small sprayer is a good idea aswell :)
