Why the HELL would you go to pick up your brand new 5 series from the dealership without arranging insurance beforehand? It's not like the BMW owner didn't know he was going to pick it up.

I'd be surprised if a dealer would let somebody off the forecourt in those circumstances. I bought my second hand car from a dealer and they gave me a free week's insurance cover, so they could get a tax disc, which gave me time to arrange my own insurance.

I hate to think what the price of a brand new 5 series is and if anyone can take that sort of hit.

The only folk taking a hit here will be the bus company's insurer. Unless thy can prove negligence on the part of the BMW driver.

All sounds a bit of an urban myth to me but in any event the bus company's liability is not affected by the BMW insurance status

If the bus hit a parked car they will have to pay

I'm sure the bus company will without doubt, report the crash to the Police and at the time, make sure to mention the BMW driver had no insurance and had driven from the dealership to his house.

The police will then nick the driver for driving without insurance and impound his car whilst adding 6 points to his license and a big fine on top.
The BMW driver will then suddenly find his insurance will increase quite dramatically.
The bus operator's insurers will pay for the damage, but the BMW driver will pay more dearly for breaking the law.

The BMW driver will probably find a mate who is covered to drive it who he called after leaving the dealership.

Plus, there's no evidence that the car was driven without insurance so unless the police catch somebody doing it, i doubt they can do much.

How can a "mate" be covered if the car is uninsured?

Or his mate trailered it there, and, as eveyone admits, he was sorting the insurance when the bus crashed ito it. The police won't want to know.

If the car was being kept on the road it'll need insurance whether it was trailered there or not lol

    Agree with scheming_gypsy.
As the car was parked and the owner was in his house at the time of the accident, he obviously wasn't driving it without insurance at that time.
Unless the police went to great effort, e.g. visited the showroom and examined the CCTV, I doubt they could show he drove it to the place where it was parked. Anyone with "Drive Other Car" insurance could have done it.
Yes it still technically should have had insurance to be on the road, but I doubt the cops will be bothered investigating this. It's a headache and lots of paperwork. They'd rather just catch someone red handed who's driving whilst uninsured (it's not hard as there's so many of them).
As the bus hit the stationary vehicle, the bus driver is responsible. The situation is the same as if the BMW driver just had TPF&F cover. He will claim off them.

It would be a better story if the BMW driver had crashed it into a tree within an hour of purchase and didn't have insurance. I am sure it's happened...
