To be able to drive other cars on your own policy the car needs to be insured by the owner.

That myth has been busted hundreds of times before!

So long as the driver doesn't get out of the car, the car is being driven whilst insured.

How can a "mate" be covered if the car is uninsured?

because he's a trader and has traders insurance or a fully comp policy that doesn't need the car to be insured whilst he has third party cover.
If the car was being kept on the road it'll need insurance whether it was trailered there or not lol

it was there for twenty minutes so it was trailered there and he was sorting insurance. nobody is going to prosecute for having a car parked on the road for twenty minutes without insurance.

    lolwut?

So what you're saying means I can go get insured on my 1.0l Corsa, then go out and drive a mates uninsured Bugati Veyron provided I don't get out of it at any point?

Do you honestly think my insurance are gonna pay out if I crash it?

Are you getting confused and believing you'll be covered for the damage to the Veyron if you did that?

You would only be covered for any damage you did to a third party. Whether you crashed your Corsa or a Veyron into another car, the payout shouldn't be much different.

And as soon as the driver gets out of the car they're committing an offence by leaving an uninsured car on the road which carries 6 points and a £100 fine.

In this case there was a significant amount of damage, so technically the police should have been called.

Good luck to the BMW driver (or anyone for that matter) if he goes down the road of finding a "mate" to claim he knowingly left an uninsured vehicle parked on the road.

You've gone round in a circle now ;)
Leaving an uninsured car on the road, and the probability of the police prosecuting for that, have already been discussed...

    Which just leaves:
In this case there was a significant amount of damage, so technically the police should have been called.
On what grounds? They only need to be informed if there is an injury or the road is blocked. If it's merely property damage, and the parties are happy to exchange contact details, there is no need to call them and they may not come out if you do.

he left the car while he went inside to get insurance, so a prosecution would probably never happen... 'yes officer, i had my new car picked up and delivered then went inside to insure it and the bus crashed into it'...

if the bus driver has admitted liability then there's no reason for the police to be involved.

Yes they will not only for what you hit.

Remember it's only third party cover so makes no odds what car you drive.

Amount of damage makes no odds as to whether the collision is reportable to the police.
