The examples given offer low interest rates and / or time limited bonuses. The Yorkshire Building Society's Internet Saver has paid 2.10% pa since 29 March 2009 and offers a Link ATM card.

The savings accounts outlined above, in the case of Natwest/RBS, come with Visa debit cards, and can be used alongside a Basic account to transfer spends etc, to circumvent the issue of the restricted Basic account debit card. I dont think anyone would actually use it as a long term savings account. They make good spending accounts, and so customers with the Basic account can just use that account for their bills, dd's etc, and it also means they dont have to open accounts elsewhere if they dont want toDebt free and staying that way! :beer:0

Do you not have a supermarket or other local shop that offers Cashback ?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The local post office will let you withdraw over the counter. But you have had at least a couple of months warning of this change, why leave it to the last minute?0

OMg. I wish I'd found this site before now. I totally feel your anger Knights Dame :mad:
For a few weeks I couldn't understand why I couldn't withdraw money out of the same cashpoint I'd been using for at least a year or two using my visa debit card (fwiw a Sainsburys), I just thought it was out of action but then after a while I got suspicious. So contacted Natwest.
Oh my lord. I had to repeat the same thing to SIX telephone reps, yes thats right SIX people. Who all told me the same thing, that Natwest had written to tell me that my account had changed. Errrrrr...... If they had written do they really think I would be calling them. No they didn't write to me. As soon as I said I wanted to lodge a formal complaint, the phone promptly went duuuuuuuuh. They hung up. very naughty.Oh and that dead end call cost me just short of £4 on my mobile too.
What a mess. I'm now left with the inconvenience of having to plan when I'm going to need money so much more carefully. Generally speaking this means I take out more than I need and consequently am spending more :-(
I thought that we were living in the 21st century????? Feels like once again, the vulnerable ones living with not much money are being punished once again for a relatively simple service like HAVING ACCESS TO THEIR OWN MONEY out of one of the 65,000 link ATMs.
To pay a fee to use an alternative bank, I would reluctantly cope with but to be told 'unavailable' or whatever is unacceptable.
I feel that it is very unethical of Natwest to change my account without informing me before it became a massive headache and an inconvenience, they simply did not give me any time to make alternative arrangements.
Not fair. Not happy.
But I like the idea of the card with the savings account I will have to look into that.0 -
I would recommend you open a barclays basic bank account......
It appears alot a people did not get the letters they was sent though ive noticed via MSE :-S
The change was communicated from 03/07/11 via several different channels:
* Letter
* Insert in bank statement
* Email
* Via Natwest Website
It was also very widely covered in the media.
I would recommend you raise a concern this can be done by viewing the following link:
http://www.natwest.com/Downloads/global_options/complaints_leaflet.pdf
Also if you need to call Natwest use the landline number 02380 226443 it may save you some money rather than calling the 08 number.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
Well my step has been changed to select (online banking shows me this) although i had an email telling me my step is now basic,
I have finally come around to the select and what it can do for me and my credit rating (thank you stclair)
but the call i had a few days ago that sales person was pushing select silver, and making out the bank was doing me a huge favour.
Still waiting for someone from the bank to find that call and listen to it. (aparently no record of the call being made) If the guy was trying to push silver onto me, very naughty as no mention of monthly subscription was mentioned, as i don't believe i should be paying the bank for such a privillage on my small income.
I too didnt get a letter, although i did get an email, but considering the amount of spam emails from banks going around i didnt take much notice and would of thought a letter would of been apropriate, now stclair has pointed out everyone would of had a letter sent, i didnt receive mine.0 -
Do you receive paper statements each month ? May have been a change of T&Cs leaflet in with a statement.
If you do not receive regular statements or letters from your bank, have you changed address and not informed your bank ?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
