A diagram in a book would certainly be easier to understand, I'm not sure what you mean by 'making it gynaecological', there isn't really anything that's more 'gynaecological' than a real life vulva!

A family member of mine is a teacher and she said that a recent episode of Embarrassing Bodies - or the Sexual Health Show or some such - pointed out all the geography on a real live vulva on a real live person and suddenly it was as if light bulbs had gone on all over her human Biology students. Evidently they had never really understood the diagrams.

A woman's genitals are a bit more internal than a man's, it would be more like the dad lifting up his penis to show a child his scrotum underneath, or separating his bum cheeks to show a child his anus, but its still not really comparable.

Or bending over to pull his pants on as fathers do in front of their children every day?

Just tell him babies come from Yorkshire.

That should confuse them enough to stop asking for a bit...

'But mum, how does the baby get OUT of a mummy's tummy??'

That's what I remember being worried about as a small child with an expectant Mummy. My dad explained it with a tea towel holder, a crayon and a tangerine.

  • crowning... and then she asked me if we could find a video of a baby being born, on youtube. I had to draw the line there!

My DS1 watched loads of youtube videos of ladies giving birth when he was about 20 months old because I was going to have a homebirth and he asked about what would happen - the only reaction he gave was to jump up and down excitedly and cheer 'baby' each time the head emerged :T
