Frugal Living Challenge 2011 - Part 3.

Well I had a most un-frugal night last night but all in a very good cause. My firend's little girl was diagnosed with cancer at 2, they've been through hell as you can imagine but she's doing really well now and started school. Her mum organsied a charity dinner and me and hubby went along. It was a great meal, then they had an auction with some great lots all donated which raised £3500 with 16 lots. Then they played a holiday raffle which was £25 to enter and I bought some raffle tickets. We spend £70 including the tickets but it was a fantastic evening for a fantastic cause so I don't mind at all.
We're off to my god-daugthers 2nd birthday party today which will be lovely, lots of sunshine, food and cake!!!Mum to 2 DSs, dog mum, wife full-time worker.

Hallo nannygladys, we're delighted to welcome allcomers to our great thread.
This is a lovely cosy circle, that can be as large as can be to accommodate all the super frugalistas out there.
wuvvies - I tend to take some of these how-to-save-a-fortune threads with a pinch of salt.We had a visitor on here some months ago who was planning to save something like £2,000 a month! It transpired he was about 22, living at home, didn't pay for his keep, and yet to shave. I couldn't feel a connection with him.
The Benjamin Franklin quote is very true. I find myself getting ridiculously excited about very small savings, like finding I could print and use Campbell's Soup coupons to get free cans. By getting a few each time, I now have a nice stock for the winter months. This warm weather has meant we don't need the heating on, which is absolutely wonderful. :T And that's a big saving.
Even though I had a free 3-months Taste Card, which saved me printing vouchers when I met with friends for lunch, and gave me a 50% discount, they've sent me a free 2-month one now. :j
All money saved, be it a large amount, or small, is an improvement. Let's hope we can carry on with our great thread.

Hi everyone,
Welcome to newcomers
I have not kept up to date with the thread very much as of late - sorry if I have missed anything, hugs to those who need them.
I go back to uni again on Tuesday eeeek. Now the hard work starts! So today is going to be spent packing and (hopefully) tidying my room in the process. Think I will go to the carboot as well this afternoon to take a break, seeing as its such a nice day it would be rude not to!
Have dug over my Mums walled garden this week - it had got full of seeds that the birds had dropped which produced horrible plants, and our neighbour suggested we may have a wasps nest in the ivy (we didn't, thank goodness - £40 fee for the council to remove it!). So, have filled it with spring flowering bulbs and a selection of plants, now it looks lovelyWas pretty reasonable as we got some great deals on the bulbs and plants. I have also planted up some forcing bulbs (narcissi and hyacinths) - not done this before so all things crossed it works! I love gardening, so much joy from the effort put in, and it doesn't have to cost a fortune - make your own compost, pick up plants from carboots etc
Hope everyone is doing alrightWe must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment0 -
Welcome nannygladys:wave:
Blairweech all the best with your new Uni year:)
Well, I've finally finished my knitted shoulder throw:j - it's pretty huge:o about 3 feet wide (so easily goes from my neck to my waist) and nearly as long as I am tall (wraps around and is all snuggly!) so it should hopefully help keep the chill off in the winter - it's a gorgeous raspberry colour (my favourite) and I think warm colours always make things seem warmer than they are.
It's not perfect but not too bad for a 1st attempt and has kept me sane over the past couple of weeks being stuck in the house:).
Anyway, need to have a trawl around and see what else is easy to knit........ I've got the bug now!
Has been horrible here both yesterday and today - raining and foggy and only about 12 deg:eek:. How it can change so much in one day is beyond me!
Hope everyone is well (human and pet) and hugs to anyone who needs one.
