  • Thanks Dizzy, will give crocheting another go I think!

Good idea about trawling around for Christmas  stuff online - I hadn't even thought of that. Parcel Force guy been here 3 times this week :eek: already. He said to me yesterday that I'll be bankrupt before I can go back to work at this rate!:o

However, it was all stuff for the cats :o - managed to get their dry food on offer. BOGOF and at around £28/bag that's a pretty good saving - now have enough for 6 months ;) so that'll help over the coming months.

Will also have a look at downloading some films after the 1st - pretty close to download limit due to being online so much over the past week or so......

Well the bread was nice. A little like soda bread. Served still warm with pate and some apples from the garden sitting in the last of the summer sun. Bliss.

I've now got a pan of mulled cider apple jelly going. A new one on me, and havnt made a jelly preserve in years, and that didnt quite go right.... So we'll see...

  • Now, Ruby, you're a treasure, :A as lots of us have told
You bring your neighbour pleasure, which has far more worth than gold

Whilst others, with their busy lives, may not have time to care
Just like the Good Samaritan, your precious time you share

You've had a bad suspicion when you've visited each week
And by your own admission, it is our advice you seek

You know that we all back you, and we all would take your part
Because your cares and worries have come straight from your heart

You've said you'll phone the family, and you'll explain your plight
Let's hope that they will take the steps, to put the matter right

Our Ruby is a precious jewel and all of us declare
You're truly blessed - you are the best - and most of all .... you care!

    xx
  • does anyone know what xmas cards would have been made out of (home made ones) in the war, and what did the home made ones look like? my son is doing WW2 this year so I thought it would be great to make some authentic xmas cards

I can remember vividly the Christmas of 1950, when I was 3 and a half. We made decorations out of packets of gummed paper chains, and my Dad cut huge bells out of newspaper, which we painted.

He also made tricorn hats out of folded newspaper, and "swords" out of tubes of newspaper. Then he fringed the edges and pulled the ribbons of paper down, and that made palm trees!

Lots of things were still rationed, so it was "make do and mend" time. We never sent cards to all and sundry, probably because they were too expensive, but I was given the cardboard that my Dad's new shirt was wrapped round, and I painted a Christmas message on that!

I still have some birthday cards that my parents sent to each other, during the war. They were made of stiff card, and were padded on the front with satin. HTH

Aah Sandra thank you - that is so lovely!

That's brought a little tear to my eye!

I'm going to share that in Thoughts in the Arms if I may!

Well I had a lovely day - I made myself get going and set off to Kew Gardens eventually.

I have a yearly pass so no spend there - I was bought myself some reduced Sushi crisps and a drink (and a huge bag of minstrels -oops) so managed not to succumb to the lure of the cafe and even when I left and fancied a cuppa when passing Starbucks I thought no I'll wait until I get home.

I did buy a few gifts for my daughter in a little gift shop before I got there and a pretty BPA free flask for her from the health shop on the way home - but that needs to be done so my day was rather frugal.
Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
    And we were young.

I don't believe in the concept of hell, but if I did I would think of it as filled with people who were cruel to animals.

  • Ruby sweetie, you can share it with whoever you wish! I meant every single word, because there must be so many other neighbours and relations who could spare half an hour each week, to do what you do - but you find the time, and that's what sets you apart.

God Bless your kind heart. :A

    xx

PS - just seen I've got over 20,000 thanks!
