Someone's asked me for a Pokemon cake for his son, but he doesn't like icing! how do I decorate a cake without icing? I'm inclined to suggest he pick the icing off (like I do)

do you store the made shapes in a container in a cupboard or do you put them in the fridge?

you could always put yellow colouring into the cake itself and then just use icing fr the features or yes I agree the best and easiest thing to do would be to say- pick it off! he can always have a bit out of the middle so he would only have to cut the top off! xx

Do you mean icing shapes? They're best stored in a cardboard box, in a dry place, not in the fridge.

I just store my icing figures in a tupperware container, but leave the lid off so that the shapes dry out.

AnnieH: What about marzipan or Buttercream?

  • Annie H my daughter doesn't like icing, so I always do her cakes with butter icing. If I need to do any shaping or moulding to the cake, I usually add chocolate (dark or white depending on the colour I need) and this stiffens the icing up enough.

You tube is where I learnt most of my cakey skills. Bbcgoodfood.com have brilliant cake recipes. I always use their easy vanilla cake one.

Ok - so I'm all ready to have a go tonight, I have all the ingredients in to make the basic sponge. Now, what about filling and decorating it? I've bought some ready roll icing (which I'm sure is an horrer to most of you good people!) Do I put it directly on the cake or do I need to put Jam or marzipan or something in between the cake and the icing?

Buttercream is fine for filling cakes with use 1part butter, to 2 parts icing sugar, a bit of vanilla extract and a dash of milk to get the required consistency.

Put a very thin coat of buttercream on the outside of the cake, and that will stick your roll out icing on.
