I have been lurking on this thread for ages and love looking at all your cakes, This year I took inspiration and instead of the normal christmas cake decorations I decided to get creative.

My Son's 1st birthday cake. Pirate Theme.

The cake is 11" and the cake board is 20" to give you some scope of the size.

Wow love the snowman cake Monz and Bailey your pirate cake is brill. Strangely I did a pirate cake last week, must update photos. Afitos it's that long since I've done it I think I will need a refresher too. I do remember you need to go through a photo sharing site like photobucket etc.

Thanks, wanted something that was fairly straight forward to do and only took an hour or so as we had a hectic few days. With cooking for 10 Christmas day and then a party for 25 2 days later. (all in the house)

Everyone seemed to like it. The only issues was i made the cake a week in advance as that was the only time to make it as was working straight up to Christmas eve so the Madeira was a little dry. Been fine when made it a few days to go.

I have used the same madeira cake recipe for at least a year and normally turned out fine.

Maybe need to look for another one

Does anyone else have a problem with the icing/fondant smoothing paddles sticking to a cake and dragging on the icing? i have only used them a couple of times i don't make cakes to sell just for birthdays etc but each time they seem to catch on the icing i make sure they are dry etc, but nothing helps, i also tried a little trex and it was suggested on a video i watched that just made it worse

From being self taught and what I've learnt through trial and error, it sounds like the sugarpaste has moisture on it or the paddles are wet? Either that or there is too much buttercream in your crumb coat, which makes the icing move rather being stuck to the paddles. I used to do this, until I found a tutorial on facebook on how to properly crumbcoat a cake, and you use a straight side scraper to take off ALL the excess buttercream off the cake before you put it in the fridge. My cakes ever since never bulge or slide and are perfect. I'm sure that other people will be along to correct me if I'm wrong and help you :)
