Lovely tower rubysmummy. I buy the icing ready coloured unless it's only very small amounts. Life is definitely too short to be kneading huge quantities of sugar paste until the colour is evenly distributed.0 -
Yes, it was stacked as it was a late ask and I couldn't manage to take it to the venue and stack it for her. I'd rather have done this but I had to change shifts at work to make the cake so was working the day of the wedding instead and couldn't go to the venue and do it. This was partly why I said she sould have it in the boot on a flat surface.
Please don't think for a minute I'm criticising. I just think that would have made it even more unsafe to transport on a knee. Not your fault at all. Hugs. xoxo0 -
Oh no, not at all Golden Anemone!!! Not for a second! I just feel disappointed that my hours and hours of work ended up like this. I just wish that I'd said no to her. I know that it's all experience but this has really put me off and now I'm worried about doing other cakes for people incase they're rubbish too. I've got another 3 tier to do in August for a wedding and now I feel sick at the thought.0

But that's the point nat, the cake wasn't rubbish - it was perfect and absolutely gorgeous. Perhaps the lesson is to only do 3 tiers when you will have time to transport them yourself? I'd be really upset to think you let someone else's mistake put you off. Your cakes are wonderful and you should be really proud of them, I would be. Night night.0 -

), it's just that it is going to be v warm this week and you risk the icing melting so you do need to find somewhere airtight and cool to store them.
nat82, I think you're very wise to to take before shots of your cakes as that demostrates your true talent. When you watch Ace of Cakes, Cake Boss etc there's always a hold-your-breath moment as the doors to the van are opened to see if the cake has arrived intact.
Just wanted to say thank you to everyone on this thread for your inspiration! Am now back in full baking mode, and am aiming to make one large cake a week as long as I have people to share them with.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

What i have been doing recently is buying the white packet icing and colouring it myself but is this correct?? My wrists arent very good and they ache for days afterwards but is it really expensive to buy already coloured sugarpaste and is it sugarpaste you use to cover cakes or is it just for the decorations on top - sorry for all the questions!
I just made a top gear cupcake tower this weekend - i was up all night finishing it off and i was a bit worried as i did them yellow but they loved them!
For small modelling items I sometimes buy a pack of ready coloured icing from Sainsburys (I think it's by Dr Oetker, and there are 5 different colours in a pack, red, blue, green, black, yellow and it's only somethink like £2.00).
I have just treated myself to some Sugarflair food colourings (paste) and find these much easier to use rather than the old style food colouring liquids.

Hi Nat
Dont worry about it its not your fault the cake left you in perfect condition its not your fault they chose to ingnore your adivse and transport it on someones knee. If I was the customer I would take complete ownership after all when you are collecting things you should take full reponsibility. You carnt complain to Tesco or Asda if your eggs are broke after you transported them home in the bottom of a carrier with bottles on the top it was their choice not yours hun dont beat yourself up carry on doing your lovely cakes0 -
