I buy the ready to roll sugarpaste and colour it if it's for small amounts but if I need larger amounts to cover a whole cake then I buy it already coloured (unless it's a colour I can't get). Fab cake!

Thanks Hannah but I feel pants about it :(

So, I've just seen a photo of my black and pink wedding cake and the bottom tier slid :( It didn't completely break but you can see that it has shifted back.

I put 5 dowels in the bottom tier, 4 in the middle and used royal icing to secure each tier.

She did drive 20 miles with it in the back of the car, on someones knee (even though I advised her to put it in the boot) and I wonder if that is what has caused the damage or if it was something I did wrong?

I could actually vomit right now :(

I'd say it was the way they travelled with it that caused the damage.Don't worry about it,it's not your fault at all and they should realise that.

Will they not keep if you make them mid-week and store in an airtight container? Bearing in mind summer is finally arriving this week, you'll need to find a cool place. How many are you making btw?
    .

Making about 40 I think, I have managed to swap my shift so have thursday off. Do you think if I make them on Thursday they will be OK Sat ? Do I keep them in the fridge or just out ?

Nat - sorry about your cake, I hope it is something that can be easily fixed .:)

I wouldn't keep them in the fridge. Unless I'm making them the night before, I always freeze them.

Oh Nat how awful! I agree though definitely not to be recommended on someone's knee!
Rubysmummy I usually colour my own but someone said asda do a pack of Dr Oetker mixed colours for a reasonable amount so may give them a go next time.
Legendmum I have to colour some red as well and I think it was Nat (sorry if I'm wrong!) that suggested red extra from sugarflair so I've ordered some and will give it a go.

Thanks ladies. I feel a bit better about it tonight.

Yip, go for the sugarflair extra red. I used it for red rose cupcakes a few months ago and it did the trick. I got mine from eBay. I use a seller called Party Animal Online.

Oh poor you nat, I'd definitely agree it was her fault for transporting it on someone's knee. It was perfect when she collected it so her fault, not yours.

Just a thought though - did they transport it stacked? The only time I've made a 3 tiered cake I transported it unassembled and stacked it at the venue just in case. I felt it would have been very heavy for anyone to carry it stacked and the chances of it slipping greatly increased. Understand though that isn't always possible.

Yes, it was stacked as it was a late ask and I couldn't manage to take it to the venue and stack it for her. I'd rather have done this but I had to change shifts at work to make the cake so was working the day of the wedding instead and couldn't go to the venue and do it. This was partly why I said she sould have it in the boot on a flat surface.
