tried my first batch of caramel cupcakes last night - ive brought them into work so i shall see how they go down at lunch time. Fingers crossed they'll like them. ive only ever done vanilla ones. Next on my list is going to be after eight mint ones. Can anyone recommend any other flavours to try??

My daughter made 80 cupcakes for a works do yesterday. She made, amongst others, mint ones with half an After Eight mint (cut diagonally) on and Chocolate Orange with an individual piece of Terrys Chocolate Orange. Some of these cupcakes had orange juice & zest in and the icing was chocolate and others were chocolate cupcakes with an orange flavoured icing. She got bags of individually wrapped Chocolate Orange segments in Poundland. The orange ones went down better than all the others :)

I'll tell her about the caramel ones and maybe she'll make some for me next time :rotfl:

i used caramal (got it in a tin from asda) in the cake and in the buttercream and also melted down 3 bars of caramac for the buttercream. Yummy if you like caramel - i will definately be making them again!!

Hi All, I popped this posted in special occassions, but someone kindly pointed me in this direction.
I love to bake and would really like to be able to make my little girl a cake for her birthday (I have a few months yet!).
Although I like to bake, I've never attempted a birthday/celebration cake....
does anyone have any tips for where to start or any good projects for me to practice with?
I've made madeira and sponge cakes before, but other than icing cupcakes I'm a newbie!
    Thank you

Hi Tootoo, my advice would be to start simple. A really lovely simple cake is a lot better than a really ambitious project that looks a bit rubbish. Search Google images or Flickr for ideas and inspiration once you've thought of a theme.
Madeira cake is perfect for birthday cakes, as it holds up to the weight of sugarpaste. You tube is also a great resource for "how to" videos, from how to decorate with sugarpaste (or fondant as the yanks call it) to how to make sugar decorations. You name it.
Good luck. And don't forget to post pics :D
