I got the wire from Cakes, Cookies and Crafts Shop. It's florists wire.

I just stuck them in the cake to be honest. I did a cake decorating course and this is how I was taught to do it. He didn't cover it with anything either and he's a very experienced cake decorator so I just followed his lead!

I used some CMC powder worked into the sugarpaste, cut out mu shapes, dipped the end of the wire into some water the pushed the wire halfway through the shape and laid it flat to dry. I made them in the morning and decorated the cake in the evening so they had time to harden up.

Thank you so much for your reply. Really really useful and gives me one less thing to worry about.
May I ask the size/width of the wire you used?
    Thanks again

It was either 20g or 22g. It was quite long so I just snipped it to size, roughly half the length. x

Great cakes everyone. Kevie192 could you tell me how you did the Banoffee cupcakes please, are the bananas dries on top?
    Thanks

    Hiya.

The cakes themselves have 2 mashed bananas in with my usual mix per 12 cupcakes. The 'toffee' is actually caramel made from boiled condensed milk (I do mine in the slow cooker).

Once the cakes are done and cooled, I cut a small hole in the top and put a teaspoon of caramel in each. I then make buttercream icing and flavour it with the remaining caramel, leaving a couple of tbsp for decoration. Then just pipe it on, add a dried banana on top and drizzle with the remaining caramel.

I think they are delicious and definitely my most popular!

    Enjoy...

I did a giant cupcake last year for a friend's daughters birthday, I covered the bottom in sugarpaste, its quite easy to work with and looked good -

Ooh that looks really good! Do you ice it like a normal cake, cutting it at the bottom?

I saw a video where the lady sat the cake on the sugar paste and brought it up the cake, flapping the excess over the top as its hidden by the top. Dunno what would be easiest!

    Hi

I made my first giant cupcake for my sons birthday in Jan I used ready to roll icing for the bottom. I rolled the icing out quite thin and a little wider than the cake. I glazed the cake with a little jam mixed with some hot water and melted in a pan until it was runny and painted it on with a pastry brush . I picked up the icing and pressed it around the sides trimming the ecess at the join then I folded over the little bit of excess at the top. To get it into the grooves I went around the cake with a knitting needle pressing the icing into the grooves (you could use a skewer as I dont think you will have much call for a knitting needle :rotfl:)

    Kevin,

When you filled the inside of the Giant Cupcake with jam, did you just cut the middle of the cake out and fill it? What type of jam did you use and what other types of fillings do you think would work?

I ended up just piping buttercream onto the bottom of my giant cupcake instead of using sugarpaste last night but the roses on the top worked out quite well with the 2D tip. Far from perfect but the person I made it for liked it!

Also, what recipes does everyone use for their Giant Cupcakes? I can't seem to find the perfect one :( either too dry or too moist! Any help would be appreciated! x

I have the silicone giant cupcake mould and it comes with an insert to put on top which makes a dip in the middle to fill with something so I just put some jam in there. You could just cut a bit of cake out the top though...

I just used homemade jam out of the jar in there but I guess you could use anything... Lemon curd, caramel, nutella spread, just frosting?

Do you have a pic of your cake?

I think I used a std 6 egg mix - 12oz each of flour, sugar and marg with 6 eggs.
