As youcan see from my previous posts, I am about to make a giant cupcake for a party. I've only ever done swirly piping using a 1M tip on a giant cupcake before and this time I am going to be piping buttercream roses on it using a 2D tip. I can do this pretty well on top of regular cupcakes so is it going to be anymore difficult to do it on top of a giant one? Do I pipe straight onto the cake or should I do a thin layer of butercream first? Should I start piping at the bottom or the top?

I'm panicking a bit here so any tips would be gratefully received!!!

    Many thanks, Nat.

Hi Nat, I did one like that for an aunt's birthday at beginning of January [there is a pic somewhere in this thread but I can't find it now as I'm at work]. Like you I was worried but found it much easier than I expected to. Based on advice from Annie I started at the bottom and worked up. Everything just fitted into place fairly naturally. I didn't have a layer of buttercream first [I was away from home and had just enough buttercream to work with] so I just covered the odd gap with a quick squeeze of icing and plonked a sugar decoration on top of it. Hope that helps.

Just done this '1' cake this week. It's the first cake that somebody has 'ordered' from me. I was so nervous doing it but it turned out fine!

Wow! Love this cake! May I ask how you did the wire work? I've read so many ways on how your should/should not do it so am utterly confused. Ie things to do with straws so wire doesnt touch cake etc. Is it normal florist wire and did you just stick it in the cake ? Thanks

Thank you! I had visions of all the piped roses falling off the side of the cake!!! x

I got the wire from Cakes, Cookies and Crafts Shop. It's florists wire.

I just stuck them in the cake to be honest. I did a cake decorating course and this is how I was taught to do it. He didn't cover it with anything either and he's a very experienced cake decorator so I just followed his lead!

I used some CMC powder worked into the sugarpaste, cut out mu shapes, dipped the end of the wire into some water the pushed the wire halfway through the shape and laid it flat to dry. I made them in the morning and decorated the cake in the evening so they had time to harden up.
