hi, I am planning on making an princess ariel cake for my daughters 5th birthday. I was planning to make a rectangle cake and ice the outline then flood the picture with the coloured icing. would this be a good idea?
also how long before icing would I be able to make the cake? and how long would it last after icing? for example her party will be on the saturday, when can i make the cake?
thanks xx0 -
So sat down with DD11 this afternoon to do buttercream icing and it turned into a family event with DS14 and DH also having a go. These are pics of the best ones that I did. Still lots of practice needed, will hopefully be able to have another go tomorrow and also going to try making some fondant roses.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

i would bake on thursday, and crumb-coat and ice it on the friday. as far as making Ariel goes, i would make the lady herself by printing a colouring-in picture of her, and make an icing run-out of her. to do this, secure a piece of wax paper over the picture of Ariel, and trace her outline in a fairly strong royal icing, using a very small piping tip. once this is dry, the various parts of the picture can be 'flooded' with a slightly diluted mix of royal icing in the appropriate colours. perhaps do this on weds as it will need a few days to get nice and solid. on saturday you can peel it back veeeeeeeeeeeeeery carefully and place onto the iced surface.
great tutorial here, and once you crack it, its a marvellous cake skill to have. hope this helps!

Hi!
Has anyone ever frozen un-decorated cupcakes before? I just wondered how the paper cases were once they had defrosted? I have visions of soggy cupcake cases
Thanks in advance x0 -

I have and both the cakes and cases were fine once defrosted. i have sometimes found the cakes go a tiny bit sticky on top once defrosted but that won't be a problem if you're going to decorate them.0 -

It's never as obvious on white or pastels but it's really annoying on black or brown. I tried using vodka on a cloth to wipe it away but think I've made it worse. Thanks.
Hi, I find using vodka can make it streaky. If you can steam it (either with a steamer or an iron) it works really well. Obviously making sure the machine is limescale-free!:j:T Gorgeous twin girls born 1st Nov 2012 :T:j0 -
Love this thread and got great ideas and tips from you all. And the cakes are fab.
Now I've got a question, does anyone know where I can buy corn syrup? Or is there an alternative? I want to have a go at making modeling chocolate. Cheers:hello:0 -
