Been wanting to have a go at cake decorating for a while and now got some bits and pieces so we can start practising buttercream and fondant icing. Will be doing it tomorrow with DD and her friend, so wish us luck!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

I've just started out and have been doing cupcakes, once I save a bit more money I want to try out big novelty cakes.0 -

They are going a valentines cake sale at the school next week so I am going to make some to donate, I'm quite looking forward to it because this is where I can try and get really creative!0 -

Fantastic cake GA! It's awesome!Golden_Anemone wrote: »It's probably too late this time but can any more experienced cake decorators tell me how to get rid of the icing sugar dusting on the dark sugar paste. It's never as obvious on white or pastels but it's really annoying on black or brown. I tried using vodka on a cloth to wipe it away but think I've made it worse. Thanks.Golden_Anemone wrote: »One tip I read somewhere was to rub Trex on the worktop or mat you're rolling out on to stop it sticking. Has anyone tried that?
Yes this does work really well, but I found that when it came to smoothing the fondant down on the cake, the smoothers didn't glide and the fondant ripped easily, so prefer cornflour.0 -
Going to have a go of this for valentines day did you make chocolate sponge
Thanks
Hi Awesome, nope, I used victoria sponge, the layers were quite thin (I used an 8oz mixture split between 2 tins, they didnt rise much, but the 3 layers I used were more than high enough once the buttercream and jam was used in between. I could have done it with the 4 layers (or 2 layers with more mixture), that way the chocolate fingers would have been the same height and it would have had more of a box shaping i guessYou're so very special, I wish I was special :dance:0 -

You need a paintbrush and vodka or cooled boiled water. I usually brush all over the cake After its finished just to catch any marks.

Thank you so much Annie - I'll try that technique next time. :-)0
